During their FaceTime talk, Mike Perry checked on Jake Paul‘s weight, making a few guesses. ‘The Problem Child’ laughed it off. However, ‘Platinum’ assured that whatever Paul’s weight, it doesn’t matter since he has sparred against heavier fighters in the past. To many fans, the discussion might seem like just another buildup to the duo’s upcoming fight on July 20. They will meet for an eight-round fight at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
But the discussion seems to have sparked an interesting conversation, over ‘The Problem Child’s weight. The Mike Perry fight happens at cruiserweight, whereas the earlier scheduled fight with Mike Tyson was supposed to take place at heavyweight! Reports of Jake Paul adding weight had already emerged before the Tyson fight. Even his former trainer, Shane Mosley, appeared startled by how much Paul had gained. The final weigh-in is scheduled for Friday. Only then will a clear picture of the two fighters’ pre-fight weights emerge. Until then, doubts linger about whether a much heavier Ohioan is entering the ring.

Jake Paul shocked everyone by revealing his weight in the lead-up to the Mike Tyson fight. On his podcast, ‘BS w/ Jake Paul’, he updated how it surprised so many when they learned about his weight. Paul mentioned that “normally I’m fighting at like 200; I’m walking around at like 210,” so it was surprising to him as well that he weighed around 230 pounds.
But a close look reveals how much Tyson Fury weighed during the undisputed battle with Oleksandr Usyk. So why did ‘The Problem Child’ go to such lengths? He explained that after his last fight, he apparently started eating more and piling up weight. Soon, he realized that his body could handle it fairly well.
Then came another shocker. Jake Paul said that he might extend his weight up to 240 pounds and then gradually, once the training camp started, bring it down to 220 pounds. “It’s basically like I had a 20 lb. weight vest on for the whole entire camp, so my muscles are going to be like, so much stronger and and that speed will will come through,” Paul revealed.

Now it only needed an attestation from Shane Mosley to confirm. Speaking with Roy Jones Jr. on his podcast, ‘Sugar Shane Show’ the former three-division champion said, “I saw Jake yesterday, and he was 230 pounds. He look kind of big. Yeah, he was 230, right…so yesterday I see him; he was 230. He’s really big, and he looked like he was comfortable, like in the weight.”
Weight Difference Between Jake Paul and Mike Perry
Jake Paul weighed around 198 pounds for the Andre August fight last December. In March of this year, he went against Ryan Bourland. He weighed around 199.8 pounds against the latter’s 197.4 pounds. So how is it going to be this time against Mike Perry? Where is the scale tipping for the former UFC fighter and now bare-knuckle boxer?
Three months ago, on April 27, Flint, Michigan-born and now Florida resident Perry fought Thiago Alves during his fifth bare-knuckle fight. Apparently, the bout marked his return to light heavyweight. He weighed about 184 pounds. The last time he fought an opponent in the weight class was nearly a year ago when he defeated Luke Rockfold on April 29, 2023.

In between, he went back to the middleweight division to face Eddie Alvarez. It is important to note that Perry fought fifteen fights under the UFC banner and earlier mixed martial bouts in the lightweight and welterweight classes.
Therefore, for Jake Paul, Mike Perry might have to raise the bar by another 10-15 pounds to meet the cruiserweight requirements. A clear understanding will emerge once both fighters step on the scale. Nevertheless, the weight difference between Paul and Perry may not really be as significant as the one between Fury and Usyk, which was nearly 29 pounds!

Going against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, it is understandable that Jake Paul may have to bulk up a bit. But the fight against Mike Perry seems to have altered the equation. He might have to scale down to meet a much lighter fighter. Let’s wait and watch.
