Can Jake Paul really take on Canelo Alvarez, or is he just chasing a pipe dream?

YouTube boxing sensation Jake Paul appears to have a range of intriguing challenges ahead. On November 15th in Texas, ‘The Problem Child’ defeated the 58-year-old Mike Tyson, and since then, he’s been met with calls for a showdown from top fighters like Artur Beterbiev, Daniel Dubois, and even retired legend Carl Froch. However, Paul has made it clear that his ultimate goal is to face the biggest name in boxing.

The 27-year-old claimed he wants to fight against former undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. However, the Mexican superstar has previously suggested that he is not interested in such a bout against Paul in any shape or form. Following the challenge from Paul recently, Canelo hasn’t even acknowledged the challenge.

However, boxing YouTuber ShowBizzTheAdult has suggested the perfect opponent for Paul to take on if he wants to make a legitimate claim for a future fight with Canelo Alvarez. “I know who Jake Paul should definitely fight next. Edgar Berlanga” the boxing YouTuber said. ShowBizz explained that the people now want to see Paul against an “active pro boxer.”

It’s also worth noting that Canelo Alvarez defeated ‘The Chosen One’ back in September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, via a one-sided unanimous decision win. Canelo went as far as to drop the 27-year-old Brooklyn-born fighter in the 3rd-round to cement his dominance over the younger opponent. So, if Paul can deal with Berlanga in a fight, there’s no reason he can not land a fight against ‘Cinnamon.’

“Berlanga isn’t really considered as a highly skilled boxer though. He’s known as more of a puncher than a boxer,” he added. The boxing YouTuber felt ‘The Problem Child’ has a similar reputation of being known as a puncher rather than a skilled boxer. ShoBizz also pointed at their resumes, suggesting nobody knows the people Edgar Berlanga fought before Canelo.

Whereas, people can at least name the people Jake Paul has fought, so a fight between the two would completely make sense. Meanwhile, Berlanga seems to be open to the idea of fighting Jake Paul. In a now-deleted tweet on X, the Puerto Rican boxer wrote, “I will f**k you up @jakepaul Puerto Rico keeps tagging me. You f**ked up 60-year-old man. Puerto Rico is mine.”

However, the Cleveland native, who lives in Puerto Rico, has more offers on the table.

Former foe agrees to square off against Jake Paul

Tyson Fury’s half-brother, Tommy Fury, may have a fight ready against UFC contender Darren Till in January, but the potential to make piles of money has forced him to talk about a rematch against Jake Paul. The duo originally squared off back in February 2023, with Fury emerging victorious via a split decision.

However, after Paul defeated Tyson earlier this month, Tommy Fury told ESPN about a potential rematch, “In a heartbeat, yeah. I mean at the end of the day I think me and him, we’re set in stone.” Fury highlighted that Paul’s only loss was against him, so they will eventually get back in the ring. “I know I’m going to be an improved fighter and with him the [fights] he’s taking and what he’s doing, I’m not sure if he’s going to improve that much,” he added.

That said, despite ShowBizzTheAdult’s suggestion of a Jake Paul vs. Edgar Berlanga fight, it would be surprising if Paul actually faced an active pro boxer. More likely, he’ll return to fighting former UFC fighters or take on an opponent who is relatively unknown. Who do you think Paul will square off against next?
