Back in November, when Jake Paul laid down a challenge to Canelo Alvarez, no one thought that it would amount to anything. After all, no one could even imagine one of the best pound-4-pound fighters in boxing today to accept a challenge from a YouTuber. However, the last few days were enough to break that myth and once again solidify that anything can happen in modern boxing.
Canelo and Paul actually had a contract in place for the fight. And if it wasn’t for His Excellency Turki Alalshikh‘s timely intervention, we would have to watch that fight in May. As the chaos of the last few days finally settled, an old video of Joe Rogan has resurfaced, indicating how, even after getting played, The Problem Child might have dodged a bullet.

Canelo Alvarez’s backout: Blessing in disguise
An old clip of the UFC commentator reacting to the idea of their potential fight has resurfaced. The clip dates back to the initial days of Jake Paul throwing out the challenge and Rogan found it funny. Oh, not funny. Hilarious. For him, there is not even a competition between the duo. Well, he is not alone.
‼️ ANNOUNCED: Canelo Alvarez will face William Scull for the undisputed Ring, WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO super-middleweight world titles on May 3rd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This is the first of Canelo’s four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season. pic.twitter.com/Q52jV2WUqK

On the mention of Jake Paul calling out Canelo Alvarez, the JRE host replied, “That’s hilarious.” He was not even able to entertain the idea and declared, “That’s a death sentence,” for Jake Paul. Given the fact that ‘El Gallo’ started boxing just five years ago and has never fought a legitimate active boxer other than Tommy Fury, whereas Canelo Alvarez has been actively boxing since he was 13 should give you a pretty good idea of why Joe Rogan found the idea ludicrous fighting. In the end, this deception by the Mexican superstar might have proven a boon for Jake Paul. Furthermore, Rogan has other reasons to not like the idea of the fight.
Joe Rogan then explained, “But Jake Paul’s 200 pounds. Canelo Alvarez really should have never fought at 175 pounds,” claiming that it would not be a good competition inside the ring. Recently, BAVAFA Sports revealed that Alvarez had to agree to fight Jake Paul at 200lbs before backing out. This means that if the fight had happened, all of Rogan’s worst fears would have come true.
While Joe Rogan and the boxing fraternity are relieved that the fight isn’t happening, Jake Paul is not a fan of these developments. Instead of being grateful that he avoided the “death sentence,” the 28-year-old has been on a tear on social media.
Jake Paul joining hands with another Canelo rival
As soon as Ring Magazine announced that the unified super middleweight champion had signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, scrapping the fight with a novelty fight, Paul took to Instagram to share his frustration. He declared, “Breaking news: Canelo Alvarez ducked me.” He went on to slam Canelo’s contributions to the sport and made it a USA vs. Mexico rivalry.

The rant was not enough to calm him down as the YouTuber decided to share the contract signed between the duo despite breaking confidentiality. He ripped into the Mexican star and called him a “money-hungry squirrel chasing your next nut,” who could be bought. He even attacked the Riyadh Season figurehead Turki Alalshikh, claiming that, “they couldn’t fathom the fact that they can’t create a bigger fight than me and you.”

However, he turned things up a notch on Monday, as he invited David Benavidez for an appearance on his podcast. At this point, no two people other than them might despise Canelo Alvarez more. The announcement of Benavidez’s appearance on Jake Paul’s podcast came through an Instagram post. The post had already amassed a major trolling with the fans, taking shots at both Paul and Benavidez.
However, it does not look like Jake Paul is done. He will find more ways to rile up Canelo Alvarez. With Canelo’s new deal with the Riyadh Season already confirmed, no matter what Problem Child does, his dream won’t come true, at least not until the end of 2026. After that, who knows? But for the time being, both boxing and Jake Paul have avoided a death sentence. Do chime in with your thoughts regarding the recent developments in the Paul-Canelo saga.
