Is Jai Opetaia biting off more than he can chew with dreams of heavyweight glory?

Only 10 days had passed after his sensational win against Jack Massey, and he was back in the gym. Jai Opetaia has ambitions to be the very best, and he is proving it with his hard work in training and high output inside the boxing ring. His aspirations for gold go beyond his cruiserweight division, as he eyes a future fight with champions in the other divisions, including the likes of Artur Beterbiev.

Opetaia, 29, had a conversation with Boxing Kingdom, where he laid down his plans. The Australian champion has long expressed his desire to be the undisputed champion and go for the other champions, irrespective of their names. So, when asked about his “ultimate goal,” he had a simple answer. He said, “Just to achieve everything I possibly can. To keep improving and keep being in entertaining fights for the fans.”

When asked about the prospect of fighting Beterbiev in the future, Opetaia was confident and instantly agreed to the possibility. He declared, “Yeah, for sure. He’s a great champion, and I’m always willing to test myself to be great.” The 26-0 record holder also admitted he wanted to fight before his home crowd and hoped for enough interest in his next fight to make it happen. But it depended more on which weight he was comfortable with. Was a move-up on the cards?

When inquired about the possibility of moving up to the heavyweight division, the Sydney native didn’t dismiss it. He disclosed, “It might happen in the future. But once I go up, I don’t want to come back down in weight.” The move to the heavyweight division and fighting against the likes of Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua might take a while, as he first wants to clean up the cruiserweight division.

Jai Opetaia: ambitions to be a three-division champion

In a conversation with Sky Sports, the IBF champion had vehemently announced that he wanted to collect all the belts at cruiserweight first. Then he wanted to move up and do the same. He announced, “We want to be the undisputed cruiserweight champion. We want to collect the belts, and then we want to move up and collect more belts, either the bridgerweight or the heavyweight. A three-division world champion sounds good.”

Have an interesting take?

Opetaia has his work cut out in snatching all the marbles at the cruiserweight division, as he has been unable to attract the attention of other champions. In addition, the southpaw boxer’s dismantle job and heavy-hitting style might dissuade other champions from picking a fight with him. But it remains to be seen when he returns and whom he fights next.
