Can John Gotti III really stand toe-to-toe with the legendary Floyd Mayweather in their rematch?

John Gotti III couldn’t do much during his first encounter with legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather in June last year. However, he is back with vengeance in his mind as the duo will lock horns on August 24th in Mexico City at the Arena CDMX. The original skirmish was stopped in the sixth round when Gotti and Mayweather couldn’t stop hurling insults at each other.

Even after the referee put an end to the bout, a melee ensued inside the ring, as well as outside, making it one of the most infamous spectacles of Mayweather’s career. While appearing in an interview with TMZ Sports, John Gotti III, the grandson of the late John Gotti, former boss of New York’s Gambino Crime Family, explained he was caught off guard the first time around, but this time, things will look a lot different.

While speaking to the mixed martial artist and now a boxer, the reporter from TMZ Sports quickly probed him about what he learned from being in the ring with Mayweather for the six rounds in their initial fight. Gotti revealed that he took a lot from that fight, highlighting that it was the biggest crowd he had ever fought in front of, that too, against “a living legend” of the sport.

“He came out with bad intentions, caught me completely off guard,” Gotti admitted, claiming the only thing that could happen from an experience like that is to learn. However, that experience has taught the mixed martial artist “what to expect. I didn’t really know what to expect the first time around…” Gotti confessed.

He even claimed that he had been putting in the work for the entire last year, and now, all he could do was “show up and I’m gonna fight as hard as I [can].” When the reporter questioned him further about whether Floyd Mayweather would take their fight as seriously as before and come in with bad intentions, Gotti seemed confident about it: “Yeah, I think probably even more…”.

On August 1st, the duo met for the first time since their bout in June last year for their official press conference, and that’s where Gotti claims he had figured out Floyd Mayweather. “Getting a little feel of him at the press conference, he was really annoyed,” he said. The grandson of the former Gambino Family boss suggested that the fight has transcended a mere fight.

According to him, “It’s a boxing match, but it’s, I think, between me and him as men. It’s a little personal and we want to settle this like men.” Wanting to settle their rivalry, Gotti expressed he doesn’t want any interference during the fight like the last time, and when it’s done, “we’ll shake hands and we’ll go our separate ways”. While fans will have to wait to see whether Gotti can do what he claims, the exuberant ticket prices may hinder the people from taking part in the spectacle.

For those seeking the ultimate viewing experience, an ‘Imperial Ringside’ seat, positioned in the prime location, is priced at a staggering $128,076. Despite Mayweather’s retirement from professional boxing in 2017, his continued participation in high-profile exhibition bouts, including recent matches against Logan Paul and Deji, has kept him a major draw with boxing fans. With such high ticket prices, the focus may shift from the outcome of the fight to the impressive attendance figures at the arena.

Having said that, the rematch between Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III is shaping up to be quite an interesting affair, albeit an expensive one. Regardless, people can still tune in to see Mayweather and Gotti in action on DAZN. Do you think John Gotti III can deliver on his promise? Or is the upcoming bout destined to turn into another all-out brawl?
