Why do you think Errol Spence Jr lost his career’s most important fight against Terence Crawford? His lack of speed to tackle ‘Bud’? His fallback in defense? Well, Spence Jr. himself has revealed a new reason why he could not do his best on fight night, and it has to do with a longstanding eye diagnosis.

On the 29th of July, ‘The Truth’ lost his IBF, WBA, WBC, and The Ring welterweight belts to Terence Crawford in a historic unification clash. In a 9th-round knockout, Bud emerged undisputed, laying scathes on Spence’s undefeated career. As soon as the fight elapsed, and the Texan Southpaw realized the loss he’d incurred, he invoked the rematch clause. He conceded to the fact that Bud was the better fighter that night. While he abides by the statement even today, he’s cited an underlying cataract diagnosis that held him back against Bud.

The 33-year-old fighter, who had recently come under fire for not starting camp for the Bud rematch, updated his fans that he had undergone cataract surgery. In an Instagram story, he posted a video of himself, wearing a cozy, Essentials Fear of God pullover and his right eye packed in with medical gauze and tape. In a follow-up story, now deleted, he wrote, “Had to get cataract surgery.. its been past due shit was covering my eye.” Michael Benson posted screen grabs of the stories on his X account.

However, in the same story, the fighter also explained that the cataracts were not a new diagnosis. He had them even during the historic July fight, furthering his case that the condition prevented him from defending Bud’s jabs. He wrote, “Why do you think I got hit with so many jabs n hooks.”

Still maintaining respect for his opponent, he further added, “Still a great performance by bro.” His surgery update comes in the light of his return to social media after a huge absence. The fighter was quiet on the internet ever since his devastating loss against Bud.

No date has emerged for Bud and Spence’s rematch. It was estimated to take the course sometime in December. However, Showtime Sports’ Prez, Stephen Espinoza, later alluded that the fight would be pushed to 2024. Meanwhile, his trainer Derrick James revealed that the fighter with 28 wins in his corner had not yet joined the gym“Nah, I mean he’s not back in the gym,” James told K.O Artist Sports.

The revelation nudged fans to speculate that either Spence was changing trainers or that he was not serious about the rematch. Through it all, he remained shush. However, breaking his long silence on social media, he recently shared an image of himself with a horse at a ranch, informing his fans of his whereabouts. As the picture became the talk of the internet, one pertinent suggestion echoed, He need to get back in be gym.”
