The stage for the showdown to decide the undisputed light-welterweight king of boxing is set, and the talks for the title unification bout between WBC and WBO champion Jose Ramirez and the WBA and IBF titleholder Josh Taylor are underway. However, Ramirez’s manager Rick Mirigian showed his concern regarding Taylor making weight for this fight.

In an interview, he said, “Taylor clearly didn’t make weight for this fight and has had prior weight issues if you go back and look. It clearly didn’t matter in those past fights.
“Taylor misses weight against Ramirez and it will matter and it will cost him seven figures. “He will have to stay out of the pubs. My orders are to get the Taylor fight done from Ramirez as I did with Hooker. I’m speaking with Top Rank to start that process,” Mirigian added.
What’s at stake in this unification bout between Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez?
Both the boxers are undefeated in their professional careers and are coming off recent title defenses. Jose Ramirez (26-0, 17 KOs) defended his title against Viktor Postol via majority decision in a 12-round affair. Josh Taylor (17-0, 13 KOs) is coming off a relatively easy win over Apinun Khonsong via first-round KO.

With both the boxers at top of the division, it only makes sense for them to face each other. Taylor has also displayed his interest in fighting Ramirez next to unify the titles.

The Scottish boxer even stated that he wasn’t impressed by Ramirez’s performance in his post-fight interview. Although both the parties are keen on the fight, Ramirez’s side will look to cost Taylor his paycheck in case he misses weight. This was done with regard to Taylor’s history of weight cut issues as he has failed to hit the mark on certain occasions.
Taking into account the seriousness of Ramirez’s side concerning Taylor making weight, it could very well be a part of the contract. Therefore, a miss could prove catastrophic for Taylor. Besides the financial loss, his plans of becoming the undisputed champ of the division would also be sabotaged. Hence, it would be in Taylor’s best interest to show up and make the exact weight for the fight.
