Ryan Garcia got the book thrown at him after testing positive for performance-enhancing drug Ostarine in both his A and B samples one day before and on the day of the fight against Devin Haney. So, despite winning the fight in one of the most dominant fashions, ‘King Ry’ has to stay on the sidelines for a year, as part of his punishment. However, WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez feels Haney should rematch Ryan Garcia.
Haney and Garcia squared off in April this year. After Garcia’s PED investigation by the NYSAC, he was ordered to pay $1.2 million of his purse to Golden Boy Promotions, in addition to $10K to the NYSAC. Not to forget, his win was also overturned into a no-contest. Garcia can now get back in the ring only after 20th April 2025, provided he presents a clean urine sample. So, per Lopez’s statement on The Danza Project podcast, Haney should face Garcia again then!

Talking about Garcia’s suspension, Lopez said, “Whether it was a low dosage of ostarine or not, Devin Haney, you got your a** whoop[ed]. Take the L and just move forward.” However, Lopez thinks if Haney feels cheated because of the PED, he should rematch Ryan Garcia. He questioned: “Why are you not taking that?” It’s also worth mentioning that Garcia’s team had claimed the ostarine found in his system was low, but in reality, Garcia tested positive for 60 times the allowable limit, which is 6ng/ml.
Regardless, the reality is Devin Haney has already agreed to a rematch with Ryan Garcia after the suspension is lifted next year. In a tweet, Devin Haney claimed he was happy that the fight was declared a no-contest and not a disqualification, adding, “I wouldn’t wanna win like that once this suspension is over @RyanGarcia let’s run it back. CLEAN on [an] even playing field.. Biggest fight [in] boxing.”
However, it was Ryan Garcia who rejected the idea of a rematch between the two. In a tweet responding to Haney, Garcia mocked Haney for claiming their rematch would be the biggest fight. Instead, Garcia is hoping for a clash with a former foe. He wrote, “Garcia Gervonta 2 is way bigger.” In the meantime, a couple of boxing analysts have weighed in on whether a rematch is even feasible.

Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney rematch: Yay or Nay
Since Garcia was handed the year-long break from the sport, everyone and their grandmas are talking about it. And so are boxing analysts Paulie Malignaggi and Chris Algieri on ProBox TV. Speaking on the subject, Algieri suggested no one won that fight in April. It’s worth mentioning that since the fight, Devin Haney was offered a mere $1.6 million in a purse bid for a mandatory WBC title fight against Spain’s Sandor Martin by Top Rank.
So, Algieri suggested the low bid was a direct result of his loss, regardless of whether the loss was expunged or not. On the other hand, Ryan Garcia lost millions and will lose more when he doesn’t fight in the next year. Despite this, Malignaggi said, “People want to see this fight: Did [Garcia] really win? Did [the banned substance] really affect him? [Garcia fans] want to see him make this right.” Yet Algieri feels Ryan Garcia’s erratic behavior could present numerous pitfalls in the potential rematch happening.

At the end of the day, whether a rematch will happen or not depends upon the boxers. And why would Ryan Garcia give Devin Haney the opportunity to redeem his loss, since the loss is not even being counted? Not to mention, Garcia’s tweet clearly shows he is more interested in a rematch with Gervonta Davis. What do you think? Will there be a rematch?
