As things progressed favorably in the Heavyweight division, fans became increasingly thrilled. After the Zhilei ZhangJoe Joyce match and rematch, Anthony Joshua fights, and the Usyk title defense, they are looking forward to the upcoming Tyson FuryFrancis Ngannou bout scheduled for October 28. The weight class welcomed talks to finalize the much-wanted Deontay Wilder-Anthony Joshua bout. Then, by September’s end, fans woke up to grand news. A fight they always longed for will finally come about.

As it turns out, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have reportedly agreed to fight. Tentatively scheduled for December or January, Saudi Arabia appears to be the most plausible venue to host the grand event. Unfortunately, there came the distressing news of the Joshua-Wilder fight, which finds itself on a slippery slope. Amidst all these developments, iFL TV got a chance to speak with Eddie Hearn. Other incidents apart, the Matchroom boss shared his views on the upcoming Fury-Usyk bout.

Eddie Hearn reflects: Tyson Fury-Oleksandr Usyk

The reporter asked, “Eddie, I’m not going to mess about. You know why I’m here talking to you, Fury, Usyk signed. Did you know this was happening in the background?” Hearn replied that he was aware of the fight negotiations taking place. But he had no idea about the announcement. Either way, he expressed hope that the fight would finally take place. According to him, it would be a massive boost for the sport.

He also highlighted the fact that so many people thought of him when the fight was turning up. Even though a lot was going on, Hearn believes that the Fury-Usyk fight is excellent for boxing. But he also shared that it was a match that Tyson Fury should have gone ahead with a long time ago.

Talking on the matter, he said, “… it’s the fight Fury should be taking; it’s the fight he should have taken previously to now, but I think if it gets over the line and it happens, it’d be fantastic, and I think, as I just said in the other interview, it’s good for the ecosystem of boxing.

Most fans would remember the news to settle the undisputed debate for the Heavyweight division that had been lying open since the Lennox Lewis era. It was only a matter of time before talks for an epic battle between the unified champions, Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, erupted.

Missed opportunities?

The clash seemed imminent, with talks of the fight being scheduled for early this year. However, the bout caved in during the talks as both parties couldn’t reach an agreement. Both Fury and Usyk eventually moved on.

While ‘The Gypsy King’ returns to the ring after a break of nearly ten months, Oleksandr Usyk too came back to defend his titles against Daniel Dubois on August 26, almost a year after he defeated Anthony Joshua during their rematch. The Ukrainian has, as such, mandatory challengers to deal with. But the report of the Fury clash perhaps tops any other as far as fans are concerned.
