Dillian Whyte has announced that he is parting ways with long-time trainer Mark Tibbs. The announcement has come just over a month before Whyte puts his WBC mandatory status on the line against Alexander Povetkin.

Whyte announced the news on Instagram. The interim WBC champ cleared that there is no dispute involved and the split was an amicable one. For the fight with Povetkin, Whyte is moving his camp over to Portugal. Tibbs, on the other hand, has a newly opened gym along with his family in the UK.

“Just to let everyone know Mark Tibbs and I are no longer working together as boxer and trainer. I’m training in Portugal, Mark has a young family, and his new gym in the UK. As it stands it just hasn’t worked out in the way we both hoped it would.”

“Mark came into my team 4 years ago and has helped me turn into the world class fighter I am today. Mark is a great trainer and I will always be grateful to him and his dad for all they have done,” Whyte wrote on Instagram.

Dillian Whyte will fight Alexander Povetkin on August 21

Dillian Whyte has been the WBC mandatory for a long time now. Despite never getting a shot at the title, Whyte will defend his mandatory position. Six weeks from now, he will fight Alexander Povetkin at the headquarters of Matchroom Boxing in Brentwood, Essex.

The fight was originally scheduled for May 2 at the Manchester Arena. Owing to the global pandemic, the organizers rescheduled the fight to July 4. Eddie Hearn later announced that the fight will finally take place on August 22. The fight will mark the culmination of Fight Camp, a four-week-long event that will bring Matchroom Boxing back to action.

Even though ‘The Gypsy King’ has signed a two-fight contract with Anthony Joshua, Whyte is still hopeful of a title shot against Fury.
