“It Gave Me Like Closure”: David Benavidez’s Wife Reveals What Caleb Plant Told Her After the Fight

WBC interim super middleweight champion David Benavidez proved that he is one of the best fighters in the division following his victory over the former champion Caleb Plant. The undefeated boxer beat ‘Sweethands’ via unanimous decision after 12 rounds of a grueling and intense battle. Although Plant initially tried to use the bigger ring to his advantage, Benavidez caught up to this during the latter rounds where he showed his dominance.

The fight was hyped due to the intense rivalry between the two which has been brewing for years. It started back in 2018 when Benavidez was stripped of his title. Plant, who was the mandatory challenger for the title, was instead given the chance to fight for the vacant belt and he won it. The feud intensified in 2020 when Benavidez was set to fight Plant in a unification bout but the fight was called off. Plant would then reveal what really made him angry about his opponent leading up to this fight. However, it seems that the bad blood between the two might have been toned down after the fight as Plant went on to share a heartfelt message to Benavidez’s wife after his loss.

In an interview with FightHype, Karina Silva revealed that Plant approached her after the fight. She stated that Plant offered his congratulations to her and her husband despite the bad blood. She also claimed that she had a little empathy for ‘Sweethands’ after hearing about his struggles.

“I know I’ve always respected Caleb. He has a beautiful family and I’ve always had a lot of empathy for him because he does have a really sad backstory. And when they finished the fight, I was in the corner of the ring, and he came up to me and he told me, ‘I know there was a lot of tension, but congratulations to your family.’ And that meant a lot to me because I didn’t know how he was feeling, and it gave me like closure,” she said.

The sport of boxing is often portrayed as a violent and aggressive competition. However, beneath the surface, there can be a deep respect and understanding between the fighters, even in the midst of intense rivalry and bad blood. This was certainly proved by Plant who was not shy to congratulate his opponent even after losing.

‘Sweethands’ took to Twitter to address only the second loss of his career. He revealed that he had no major injuries and would certainly be back. Moreover, he congratulated the ‘Mexican Monster’ for his performance claiming that their rivalry was settled.

“Just a precautionary check up. I’m good. No injuries, nothing bad. Just a few licks. You can’t break a poor boy’s chin, I’ll be back. Congratulations to@Benavidez300. I make no excuses. He was the better man. A great rivalry and we settled it like men,” he wrote.

Plant will now look to get back to winning ways as his hopes for a title shot have been delayed. Benavidez on the other hand has become the mandatory challenger for Alvarez’s titles. Now, only time will tell if we will see the two Mexican stars dish it out in the future.
