Shakur Stevenson, an undefeated three-division world champion, is arguably one of the most important emerging young athletes in the sport of boxing. However, despite his accomplishments, his clout is diminishing as of late. In his last match in November 2023, the 26-year-old defeated Edwin De Los Santos, but the victory was characterized by a lackluster and unimpressive performance, making it one of the least exciting wins of last year. And now, he has added another twist to the story by announcing his retirement.
Fans have not been kind in reacting to this. They have called out Stevenson in every way possible, even making fun of his retirement. Let us see why.

Another young boxer retires
The current WBC lightweight champion announced that he will not be participating in any more professional bouts. It’s common for fighters to announce their retirement, take a break from the sport, and then later reevaluate their decision before making a comeback.
Teofimo Lopez was the last boxer to pull such a stunt. And now, possibly Stevenson. “I’m officially retiring from the sport of boxing I’ll be in the gym forever perfecting my craft and helping the next generation become great and chase they dreams but I ain’t fw this weak boxing game,” he said in an X post.
Possessing remarkable speed and exceptional skills, the Newark native stands out as one of the emerging top pound-for-pound fighters globally. The most significant bouts of his career are yet to unfold. But fans are not very forgiving, after the last impression that he made with his sub-par fight against De Los Santos, they are not too worried about the unbeaten American retiring.

The announcement has made fans even more disappointed in the fighter. One fan said that they did not have any good impression of the boxer. “None. He’s done nothing and has retired realising after his last fight that he is nit on the level of the many world class fighters in his division,” the fan noted.
