To remain a fearless warrior, Lamont Roach Jr. needs more than the love of his immediate family. His extended family has also played a big role in turning him into a champion the world knows today. Speaking with social media journalist Sommer Hill, Roach Jr. recalled a happy childhood.

“My childhood was fun, man. I was outside. I had the best fun. I had a lot of cousins. I went to DC public schools. We all went together,” he said, sharing how he belongs to a large family who had been living in Washington, D.C., for several generations.

In fact, the future champion’s life changed forever when he accompanied his cousin Jermaine Roach and father Lamont Roach Sr., for a brief sojourn. Barely 9, at Capitol Heights’ No. ‘X’ Cuse Boxing Club, he took up the gloves. It didn’t take much time before his talent shone through. During his initial days, he picked the thread under his father and uncle Bernard Roach.

Taking up boxing like a duck to water, Lamont Roach Jr. started averaging 20 hours of training per week. His hard work and perseverance paid off. By age 16, he had already amassed an amateur record of 100 fights. In 2013, at age 18, he won the Golden Gloves at the 2013 Salt Lake Edition.

While still a student, by the time he switched over to professional boxing, Lamont Roach Jr. received a slew of honors, including the prestigious USA Boxing Outstanding Boxer for his stellar performance.
