Israil Madrimov: A family man and a boxing star—can he balance both worlds successfully?

August 3 is the ‘Day of Reckoning’ for Israil Madrimov. The 29-year-old light middleweight holds the WBA belt. On Saturday, fight night, he will try to put a stop to the campaign launched incidentally by one of his favorite boxers, Terence Crawford. Going against one of the finest boxers of modern times, the Uzbek warrior knows what he is getting into. During the final press conference, he exuded confidence in defending his hard-earned title.

It was at the Anthony JoshuaFrancis Ngannou-led ‘Knockout Chaos’ at Riyadh’s Kingdom Arena that Israil Madrimov became a world champion. He knocked out the Russian Magomed Kurbanov for the vacant WBA title. Interestingly, putting aside their fight, Madrimov shares a lot of similarities with Crawford. The Omaha native comes off as much more experienced, with 40 fights under his belt. The Uzbek started off his professional journey relatively late, in 2018. But both ride on the backs of extensive amateur experience. On a personal level, both are devoted to their families and willing to do anything for their happiness and well-being. Details regarding ‘Bud’ loved ones are available, but what about ‘The Dream’s? Let’s see what we can find out.

It must be highlighted that Israil Madrimov is very particular about details concerning his family members. Focusing primarily on his boxing career, Madrimov chooses to maintain privacy when it comes to his personal life. Fans might have noticed that the faces of his immediate family members are often covered in some of his Instagram posts.

The names of the Uzbek champion’s spouse, their children, and other family members remain largely unknown. The number of children, Israil Madrimov and his wife have also remain unclear. But check out last year’s post, dated August 22. It shows Madrimov arriving at what looks like a hospital with his friends and relatives. The next shot shows him holding his newborn child. The love in his eyes would have melted many hearts, for sure. The message on the post read, “New family member, my little princess.

Another post from May this year features several father-and-daughter photos. The first one shows him holding his princess. In the next one, he is sitting on a bench, looking after his child, who is in a stroller. The third one shows him lifting his daughter in the air. He wrote, “Walking with my princess.

Madrimov also shares special moments with his other loved ones. Take, for instance, the way he wished his caring mother on her birthday. Though in Uzbek, it roughly translates to, “Happy birthday to my dear mother, my paradise.” A recent post saw him sitting beside his grandmother. “My beloved grandmother,” he said.

It’s needless to say the light middleweight champion is a dedicated family man.

Like his immediate family, details regarding Israil Madrimov’s other family members are scarce. However, in an old interview, the world champion shed some light on his early life. Born in Khiva, Uzbekistan, on February 16, 1995, ‘The Dream’, it seems, is the oldest of his parents’ three children. Though he came from a close-knit family, life was tough, far removed from the comforts he saw in the United States, where he moved to pursue his boxing dream.

“My house was in the Khiva region; it is a village-type place. My house didn’t have a heater; we had a wood-burning stove, so every day I had to collect the wood for the fire. At winter time, it was much harder…So, it wasn’t easy. I’m the oldest son. My family—my mother, dad, and younger brother and sister—we are very close to each other, and they were always very supportive,” he described.

But things changed when he took up boxing. At a fairly young age, Israil Madrimov became a national champion in Uzbekistan. After winning the silver medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, Madrimov switched gears and grabbed gold at the 2017 Tashkent Asian Championship. The following year, before he turned professional, ‘The Dream’ did his country proud by winning gold at the Jakarta Asian Games. On Saturday, he will enter the ring with an unbeaten record of 10 wins and a draw. 70% of his wins came via early stoppages.
