Whenever there is a discussion about the biggest rivalries in boxing of this era, the Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin clash always makes it to the list. The two have been at crossroads for a long period, and their fierce rivalry is increasing with each passing year. The two are supposed to fight their forthcoming trilogy match. However, there is a roadblock standing in the way of the anticipated trilogy fight.

The WBA has ordered a notice for Gennady Golovkin that, if he triumphs over Canelo Alvarez, he will have just five days, until September 23, to inform the WBA of which world championship he wants to retain. If he chooses to go back to middleweight, he will have 120 days to face Erislandy Lara and defend his crown to helm one WBA title at 160 pounds.

To put it in simple terms, the battle between Alvarez and GGG is not in peril. The Kazakh has to fight Lara after the Alvarez match, so it certainly does not affect the trilogy. Meanwhile, the WBA has clarified that they will not issue Golovkin any more special permissions. Lara would be promoted to ‘super’ champion at middleweight if Golovkin were to lose the WBA belt.

Just a year later, the two met again in the same month, at the same place. This time, the excitement of the fans was skyrocketing because they were anticipating a winner. Eventually, after a cut-throat competition, the Mexican king was announced as the winner via decision. It was even named “Fight of the Year 2018” by The Ring magazine.
