2023 has been a momentous one for Amanda Serrano. First, she became an undisputed Featherweight champion after defeating Erika Cruz on February 4. Six months later, with a unanimous win over Heather Hardy, she warded off the first threat to her titles. Last week, while the world was preoccupied with the mega fight between Francis Ngannou and Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a day before, in Orlando, Florida, Serrano defeated Danila Ramos unanimously during the second title defense.

But once again, she became a part of history. The bout with the Brazilian boxer was a full men’s boxing rule 12-round fight, each round lasting 3 minutes. Taking to her X account, she highlighted her achievements, finding them unbelievable. She said, “I can’t believe I’m the 1st woman to Make a Million Dollars, Win 7 Divisions, become Undisputed Champion & fight 12 entire 3-minute rds: a Boricua, a simple Girl born on a tiny island of PR. If my career ended 2day, what I’m most proud of is what I did for My Island.” Soon, many fans joined to commend her on her series of successes.

The push for equality in women’s boxing

It was last year, during a press conference with Katie Taylor, that Serrano suggested going for a 12-round bout. According to her reasoning, it was high time that women’s boxing raised the bar, and to do so, they should fight per the rules as applicable to men’s boxing. However, Taylor politely declined, saying such an exceptional move might not have made such a big difference. The very fact that they were able to headline at Madison Square Garden, a first for the ladies, spoke volumes about how far women’s boxing had come.
