

When Laila Ali was only 4 years old, she tried to run away from her home. Ali often talked about not having any one of her parents focused on her when she was young and perceiving the world with inexperienced eyes. At the age of only 4, in an attempt to gain her mother’s attention, something she wanted all along, she tried her hands at running away from home.

In her book, Reach!: Finding Strength, Spirit, and Personal Power, Ali talked about an incident where she thought about leaving her house with a plastic garbage bag and screaming. In the chapter Accepting Your Parents for Who They Are, Ali detailed the whole story.

“A four-year-old girl is running away from home. She throws her clothes and a bunch of junk into a plastic garbage bag and starts screaming, “I’m going! I’m going far, far away!,” Ali wrote.

While Ali ran her mother dashed after her in high heels. A few lines after Ali recorded that she desired only her mother’s attention.

Laila Ali only wanted her mother’s attention when she decided to leave home
Although little Ali had made up her mind to not look back while leaving home, she stopped at her mother’s loving touch. Her mother lovingly asked her where she was going. She asked her why she had to leave home.

“With her head hung down, the daughter stares at the ground. She feels her mother’s gentle caress against her cheek,” Ali recounted by writing. With her mother’s touch, Ali had all she wanted – “her mother’s attention.”
