In November, the world finally heard what it always wanted to hear. WBA (Regular) Lightweight title holder Gervonta Davis will meet WBC’s second-ranked Ryan Garcia on 15th April 2023. However, the much-anticipated fight had barely lifted the spirits that following news on Gervonta taking Puerto Rican Hector Luis Garcia on 7th January at Washington, D.C.’s Capital One arena popped over.
Despite familiar sounds over it being a walkover for The Tank, fans and critics were upbeat on the move. But a purported indiscretion on the part of Gervonta has left the fate of upcoming fights hanging by tenterhooks. Law enforcement authorities arrested the Tank on Tuesday on charges of domestic violence. Charged with ‘battery causing bodily harm,’ the reigning champion was arrested at Parkland, Florida, and later incarcerated at Fort Lauderdale. After paying the $1000 bond, he took to Instagram, denying his wrongdoing. He deleted the post subsequently. But it was sufficient for long-time detractors to take well-timed potshots at the Davis.

A face-off between The Destroyer with WBA Interim Middleweight title holder Chris Eubank Jr. on 8th October at the O2 Arena ended in cancellation. The reason; junior Benn, consecutively failing during the drug tests.
At the other end of the Atlantic, Gervonta, whose online feud with arc rival Ryan Garcia had kept the fans amused for some time, peaked with the former accusing the Californian of taking banned substances. Ryan’s recent pics with a bulked physique had become the talk of the town.

Then, stepping it up, Davis pulled in Conor Benn’s controversy. He criticized his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport, for not doing enough to curb the menace, “Why they didn’t ban Eddie Hearn for still trying to have fights after he knew a fighter was cheating and still tried to continue with the boxing match? “Why did you try to continue a boxing fight when you knew a fighter was dirty, @EddieHearn?”
It was time for a counter-attack, a la Conor Benn, who remained silent throughout the incident. But with Gervonta’s arrest, he couldn’t help but let out his pent-up feelings.

It will not be the first time authorities leveled domestic violence charges against The Tank. Some two years ago, the champion grabbed his ex-girlfriend by her throat in a charity tournament. Then, as the incident video clips went viral, Davis surrendered to the police. Now, with him landing in hot water again, how it will affect next year’s fights remains to be seen.
