Boxing now has a new claimant for the much coveted ‘face of boxing’ title. The untitled bout between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis on April 22 was very much about who is the new face of boxing. The eventual winner ‘Tank’ Davis, resolutely confirmed during the post-fight interview that he is the chosen one. But a voice boomed even before the pundits could review his claim from the hallowed interiors of Mexico. ‘Canelo’ Alvarez asserted that he is yet to retire. So now, a new suitor is trying to usurp the established names.
Davis’ powerful body shot brought Garcia down on his knees, far too feeble to get back. The seventh-round victory forced a question of whether he is the face of boxing now, to which Davis gave the now-famous reply, “I’m definitely the face of boxing.” But the undisputed Super Middleweight champion, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, seems to disagree. He said, “I’m not retired yet, my friend.”

But it seems the undisputed Middleweight champion (Female), Claressa Shields, differs from what the two world champions think about themselves.
Hold on! I am also there, says Claressa Shields
In a recently held interview on Instagram, she was posed the question, “If I’m not the face of boxing, who is? I got more accomplishments than everybody, that’s for sure. You can’t become a three-time division world champion if you don’t fight against the other champions in the other divisions.”

The twenty-eight-year-old Flint, Michigan-born boxer, also into mixed martial arts, turned a pro fighter in 2016 after an excellent run as an amateur boxer. She won the Middleweight gold twice, during the 2012 London and then the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics. So far, she has participated in thirteen professional bouts, winning all.
Shields is the first boxer in the sport’s history of either gender to simultaneously hold all four major world titles in two weight divisions. Perhaps on the back of such formidable credentials, she feels that her claims as the face of boxing stand on equal footing compared to others. The boxer, who openly espouses the cause of women’s participation in sports, would be fighting Hanna Gabriels on June 3 in Detroit.
