Tony Bellew became a household name in the boxing world when he was at the prime of his career. The English boxer competed at various levels ranging from World Championships to regional ones. Apparently, he showed an interest in fighting Andy Ruiz Jr.

The Bomber‘ retired from fighting in the ring after his battle against Oleksandr Usyk. Before the fight itself, Bellew had stated that he would retire post-fight. Bellew was after the ‘Undisputed World Cruiserweight Champion’ crown.

However, he could not bag the tile as Oleksandr stopped him in the 8th round. Bellew quit professional boxing thereafter, determined never to come back.

However, Eddie Hearn, Bellew’s promoter, revealed that Tony still wants to ‘feel the kick’ again. Speaking with Sky Sports, Hearn said,

“He [Tony] phoned me and said: ‘I would smash Andy Ruiz Jr… I know I could beat him’. He is a fighter that misses it.”

Yet, Hearn also clarified that there is no way that the boxer will step into the ring again.

“After the Usyk fight, he told me, ‘Make sure I never get in the ring again’. I’m 20 times more scared of [his wife] than I am of Tony.”

“He is a great example”- Eddie Hearn happy about how the retirement of Tony Bellew panned out, confirms Andy Ruiz Jr. fight out of the question.

Eddie Hearn, for one, believes that Bellew left the ring in an ideal situation. He believes it is better to retire while striving to achieve the greatest feat rather than possibly failing again and again. Hearn said,

“He [Tony] could fight again. He’s not shot, he’s not finished in the slightest. But isn’t it better to go out like that, than have one too many? Maybe he could beat Ruiz Jr. But maybe he would get knocked out and we’d think, ‘we shouldn’t have done that’.”

Truly enough, it is a great risk for any fighter to come out of retirement to further one’s own record. There is always a risk of ring rust. And Hearn believes that it is much better to leave while you’re still one of the greats than to watch yourself plummet in rankings, popularity, and respect in the sport.

“Tony’s legacy is as a guy who won British, European, Commonwealth and world championships and tried the greatest feat of all to become [the] undisputed champion. He was winning the fight in some people’s eyes, but Usyk was too good and Tony got knocked out in trying to become [the] undisputed champion. It’s nice to see people leave their career happy. And he is a great example.”
