Florida’s Board of Education has taken a significant step to promote Black history education in middle schools by approving an updated curriculum. This 216-page document, available on the Florida Department of Education website, introduces fresh guidelines that aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the experiences and contributions of African Americans. The curriculum sheds light on the resilience of enslaved Black individuals during adversity and explores the dark history of massacres involving African Americans, such as the Ocoee massacre in 1920.

However, it has become a reason for a huge controversy as of now. Many are afraid that this move will stop the new generation from learning the honest truth about the country’s history. Though the Florida Department of Education has stated that “The intent of this particular benchmark clarification is to show that some slaves developed highly specialized trades from which they benefitted. This is factual and well documented”. Even Vice-president Kamala Harris went on a huge rant against the new curriculum for black history. Recently, world champion Claressa Shields joined her in condemning the state.
