Former Olympic medalist Nate Jones recently made bold claims about sparring with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather is widely considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time, with an undefeated record spanning 50 professional fights. While sparring is different from professional bouts, it is still a crucial part of a boxer’s training regimen. Therefore, Jones’s claims can show insight into the skill of both fighters.
Jones, who won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics, was a sparring partner for Mayweather during his early professional career. Moreover, he has extensively sparred with ‘Money’ Mayweather and revealed that he often got the better of Mayweather during these sessions.

Nate Jones details his sparring sessions with Floyd Mayweather
In a recent interview with Ross Media, Jones stated that he was the only person to ever “whoop” Mayweather. The former Olympian then claimed that he hit the boxing legend with shots that he normally wouldn’t get hit with. Moreover, he also went on to say that he had boxed Mayweather so many times that he was now used to his moves.
“I whooped his a*s before and he wouldn’t mind but I whopped his a*s. I hit him with shots he normally wouldn’t get hit with cause I’m crafty and I boxed him so many times I got used to him. How he would look on the floor I’ll call his moves before him. Do it, tell him, and that would make him more frustrated but remember Floyd was some of the best work I ever had and vice versa,” he said.
It is worth noting that sparring sessions are not always indicative of a boxer’s true abilities, as the focus is often on technique and strategy rather than outright victory. However, while Jones’ claims may be met with some skepticism, they highlight the unique challenges that sparring partners can provide for even the greatest boxers.
The time Mayweather knocked out a heavyweight in a sparring session
Boxing promoter, Dmitry Salita, shared an interesting story about ‘Money’ Mayweather. In an interview with ES, Sports Salita narrated how Mayweather once sparred with a heavyweight fighter in the early 2000s, as reported by Daily Star. Moreover, he gave away 60 pounds to his opponent. The heavyweight also trash-talked everyone present, and no one had been picked to spar. Mayweather decided to step up and 30 seconds into the fight, he landed a body shot that dropped the heavyweight.
“He was just talking a lot of smack. Nobody had gotten picked to spar, so Floyd was like, ‘Leonard [Ellerbe], get my stuff from the car! Leonard went to the car and got his gear. Floyd got in the ring with him [the heavyweight]. Thirty seconds in and going his [famous] shoulder roll and that. He hits this guy with a body shot and drops the guy. He was a heavyweight, and the guy could fight.” said Salita
