The narrative around Gervonta Davis is changing rapidly. Just a few months ago, the Baltimorian was hailed as one of the most fearsome modern-day boxers. However, after the controversial majority decision draw against Lamont Roach on March 1, opinions have shifted dramatically. Tank entered the fight as a heavy favorite, but was nowhere near his best. He was sluggish, indecisive, and really struggled against ‘The Reaper’. Many fans and experts even argue that Roach deserved the victory.
With the constant chatter around the fight increasing, several personalities have come forward to criticize the Baltimorian. Former light heavyweight boxer turned trainer Brian Norman Sr. became the latest person to weigh in and put Gervonta Davis’s career in question.

Gervonta Davis “does not have the heart”
On Tuesday, the prominent X boxing page, Pound4Pound posted a clip from Brian Norman Sr’s interview with Mill City Boxing. The Decatur native did not hold back from bashing Gervonta Davis for his weak mentality. “I don’t think ‘Tank’ is a mentally strong person. I ain’t ‘don’t think’, I know ‘Tank’ is not a mentally strong person,” he declared.
Brian Norman Sr. says HE KNOWS TANK IS NOT A MENTALLY STRONG PERSON 😳

‘The Assassin’ revealed that “I watched ‘Tank’ quit”—a point he’s repeated often. The 45-year-old has claimed that ‘Tank’ allegedly quit sparring his Norman Sr.’s son and reigning WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. when the latter was just 16. He’s sticking to that story. Norman Sr. also hinted at having more tales about Davis to back up his view of the fighter’s weak resolve
He revealed that coincidentally, his son, Brian Norman Jr. signed with the same two managers with whom the WBA lightweight champion started his career. “They used to tell us stories about ‘Tank’. ‘Tank’ ain’t got it he don’t have the heart. He’s not built like that,” declared Norman Sr. alleging that Tank ex-managers have spilled that the Marylander used to run away from sparring sessions. However, the veteran trainer kept the managers, and the said stories under wraps.
However, he shifted the narrative towards a sparring session that Gervonta Davis had back in 2021. “I watched him quit for no reason. I keep telling people, ‘Go look it up.’ After February the 3rd, he had a fight, this before Barrios I believe. I can’t remember who it was. He fought somebody around February-March 2021. He faked an injury,” he declared.
What’s your perspective on:
Does Gervonta Davis have the heart to bounce back, or is his career on the decline?
Have an interesting take?
Apparently, Norman Sr. is referring to a hand injury the Baltimorean suffered during a sparring session in February 2021—an injury that Gervonta Davis himself revealed through his ‘X’ account, raising doubts about his next fight. However, considering the fact that ‘Tank’ fought twice in 2021—defeating Mario Barrios and Isaac Cruz in dominating fashion—it seems odd that he would fake an injury to get out of a sparring session.

However, given how determined Brian Norman Sr. was, he was not going to budge from his statement. Furthermore, he is not the only one who has put Davis’ mentality in question recently.
Lamont Roach: A surprise package
With both Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach desperate for a rematch, we will hopefully get one quite soon. However, this time, the 30-0-1 boxer won’t enter as the heavy favorite. After his impressive performance at Barclays Center, Roach has tipped the scale in his favor a bit. Many experts, including the undefeated super featherweight prospect Julian Gonzalez, believe that ‘The Reaper’ would take the rematch.

In an interview with YSM Sports Media, Gonzalez shared his prediction for the fight. “The first one was a tough one too. I think I had Lamont Roach, I’m not going to lie. But… I wasn’t mad at the draw,” he stated. According to him, he was not that mad about the majority draw decision that has sparked controversy all over. “I’mma rock with Lamont though, it’s hard. Lamont surprised me a lot, so I’m with Lamont,” he added.
Evidently, Lamont Roach has turned the overwhelming support for Gervonta Davis into doubts and asterisks. But what about you? Who do you think will win the rematch?
