Whatever the doubts that existed, whether Caleb Plant would be able to turn the tables following a year-long break and two losses, will now be pushed to the backburner. The gritty Tennessean has once again proved why he is one of the best pure boxers in the world. Fighting on the Canelo Alvarez–Edgar Berlanga undercard, despite being knocked down, Plant scored a decisive win over resolute and determined Trevor McCumby. The triumph has made an interim super middleweight champion as well.
Plant joined the fight following his loss to David Benavidez in March last year. Now, he can hope for a plethora of opportunities knocking at his door. However, Caleb Plant may perhaps proceed for a well-earned downtime with his family first. Speaking with Michael McCarthy, aka Large Barstool, ‘Sweethands’ shared his thoughts about the fight and what he plans to do next.

‘Sweethands’ acknowledged that McCumby was quick. He was dealing with an unpredictable opponent. So it forced him to adjust the way he fought. However, by doing so, Caleb Plant believes he could now address a frequent criticism that he is not effective at close-range fighting. So despite the fourth-round knockdown, he maintained his composure and continued to push forward confidently.
He said, “He hit me on my shoulders, and I was just off balance, so I stayed calm, stayed cool, stuck to the gun plan, and got (him) out of there like we said.” Barstool wanted to understand Plant’s strategy a bit better. He asked, “2 minutes and 59 seconds, were you tempted, kind of, you know, waiting for the bell to come off of them, or were you, uh, were you motivated to make sure you got the knockout in nine?”

The feat pretty much sums up the comeback of Caleb Plant. Now back as a champion, he could stake a claim at a rematch with Canelo Alvarez. The two fought three years ago, and the match ended with Plant suffering his first professional loss. Then, consider the outcome of today’s headliner. On account of the strained relationship they share, fans could thus anticipate a fight between Edgar Berlanga as well.
