Boxing legend Mike Tyson was subjected to a lot of abuse, both physically and mentally as a child. This led to the former heavyweight champion developing some unusual tendencies, which were only magnified in his time. During the 70s when ‘Iron Mike’ was a child, the concept of mental health wasn’t as prevalent in the masses and people suffering from them like Tyson were often misdiagnosed.

Moreover, Tyson himself was a victim of a misdiagnosis and detailed the time he was sent to a special education school. In his book ‘The Undisputed Truth’, Tyson revealed that he had to undergo psychological evaluations as a child. His mother would then end up sending him to a special school, which was more like a jail, according to ‘Iron Mike’. However, he would end up creating havoc here as well and was then given medical treatment, which would only make things worse.

Mike Tyson reveals how medical treatment turned him into a zombie

Tyson claimed that his doctors gave him Thorazine, a drug used to treat disorders like schizophrenia. However, these were very strong drugs that adversely reacted with his body. The former champ would also reveal that he would turn into a zombie with little awareness of what was happening around him.

They said I was hyperactive so they started giving me Thorazine. They skipped the Ritalin and went straight to the big T; that’s what they gave little bad black motherfu**ers in the ’70s. Thorazine was a trip. I’d be sitting there looking at something but I couldn’t move, couldn’t do nothing. Everything was cool;”

Further adding on how the drug affected him, the 56-year-old added, “I could hear everything, but I was just zonked out, I was a zombie. I didn’t ask for food, they just brought out the food at the right time. They would ask, “Do you need to go to the bathroom?” And I would say, “Oh, yes I do.” I didn’t even know when I got to go to the bathroom

The drug, which was meant to help Tyson, made his condition even worse. However, Tyson didn’t hold any grudges against the doctors as he detailed how they might have misdiagnosed him.

Tyson doesn’t blame the doctors for his misdiagnosis

On the next page, Tyson stated that the doctors must have misdiagnosed him. However, he didn’t blame the doctors because he thought bad things were supposed to happen to him. This was the mindset Tyson had formed after constantly being a victim of bad things.

My mother thought something was wrong with her baby, but I was just a badas*ed fuc**ng kid. They misdiagnosed me, probably fuc*ed me up a little, but I never took it personally when people misdiagnosed me. I always thought that bad stuff happened to me because something was wrong with me.” he added.
