“I Thought He Was Going to Kill Him”: Boxing World Erupts as One of the Most ‘Scandalous’ Moments in History Resurfaces Online

The bout between Ray Mercer and Tommy Morrison was as brutal as any boxing fight can turn out to be. Tommy Morrison lost the fight by KO in the fifth round, but it was the scariest experience for the fans. As Morrison danced with death that night because, in the beginning, Mercer started hitting Morrison’s chin with combo punches. And he landed a perfect hook which stunned Morrison and when he was falling down, his body got entangled with the ropes. So, Mercer didn’t stop throwing punches, and there Morrison was, being hit by every punch thrown at him. The referee, Tony Perez, put a stop to this brutality at the 28 seconds of the round, which was hazardously late.

The fight took place back in the day, on Oct 18, 1991. But the fans, even at that time were scared and bamboozled by the whole situation. If there was any more delay in stopping the fight, the result would have been extremely tragic. Because Mercer wasn’t stopping and was determined to put his opponent down with every punch he threw at him. Recently, the clip of this brutal knockout was shared on Twitter by Boxing Kingdom.

Many fans had their memories refreshed about this brutality that happened 21 years ago, and many fans blamed the referee for getting involved that late during the fight.

One of the fans, John Joseph, didn’t like that Mercer kept on hitting him. They further stated that it felt like Mercer was about to kill Morrison.

Another fan, It’s Alec, called the fight “scandalous” as the referee and even Morrison’s corner refused to step in at the right time. And they pointed out that the lack of protection at such a brutal sport isn’t correct.

One fan, Daniel Slocombe, agreed to everything and stated that it was absolutely shameful. And then he stated that everybody should be extra careful with Ray Mercer as he was the man who gave Lennox Lewis the toughest fight of his career. Now, Lewis was a dangerous boxer himself, as he knocked out Mike Tyson when they fought against each other.
