In his prime, Mike Tyson defeated the toughest of opponents. However, today, when his prime is long gone, it seems like his toughest challenge is yet to come. How does he prepare for this impending challenge that he’s signed up for?
On July 20th, against a much younger opponent, ‘Iron Mike’ will enter the ring four years after his last boxing stint. The difference, however, is that the 2020 fight against Roy Jones Jr. happened on a much equal premise, on the age front. However, his forthcoming opponent, Jake Paul, is about 30 years younger than Mike Tyson and is on the cusp of his prime. This staggering disparity has not only raised concerns about his safety but also about his legacy. Can he successfully do it this time around without marring his legacy as one of the best ever in boxing?

With a little over three months left for the unexpected clash against the ‘Problem Child’, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ has begun his camp. While he’s not unfamiliar with the entire concept of a training camp, this time around, he needs to be extra careful. The fighter, 57 now, will be 58 by the time fight night dawns. He needs to consider his age now.
While these constraints might limit his ability to prepare for the Texas fight, he seems to be going all ahead, leaving no stone unturned. In a conversation with Fox News, Mike Tyson outlined the training schedule he has in place.
He explained, “I train every day. It’s the whole day, the process goes through the whole day. I get up in the morning and do the row work. Then I go to the gym at 1 and then I go through the strength and conditioning guy and then it starts all over again.”
At the moment, helping him prepare for the big fight is famous MMA trainer, Rafael Cordeiro. The two have been associated for years now, and Cordeiro was also in the fighter’s corner when he clashed against Roy Jones Jr. in his last exhibition bout.
It is interesting to see the motivation the legendary fighter has shown in the days leading to the fight. While most fighters his age would rather resort to luxury retirement days, he holds the vehemence to venture back into the ring. It’s not like he’s unaware of the risks. He’s heard all the concerns raised. Yet, he goes on. What is his head space buzzing with right now?

To Fox News, in the interview, the fighter did not shy away from saying that he is afraid of what is to come on fight night. But that he says, is his personality. His fear helps him prepare his best. He admitted, “I was 100 pounds overweight, I was however old, 54, 53, and I said ‘Let’s do it.’ Anything I’m afraid of, I confront it. That’s my personality. Right now, I’m scared to death.”
“I always believed that adversity and nervousness pretty much catapulted me into success. If I didn’t have these feelings, I wouldn’t go into this fight. I have to have these feelings to fight. Without them, I would never go in the ring,” he further confessed.
However, with each day getting closer to fight night, the fear dissipates. “As the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become, because it’s reality. And in reality, I’m invincible,” declared Mike Tyson.
