The three-division world champion, Gervonta Davis, is all set to give the lightweight division one of its most stellar bouts yet with a sensational showdown against the lightweight superstar, Ryan Garcia. The fight has undoubtedly found a place in the hearts of fans, with a lot of them at the edge of their seats in anticipation of the fight.

While the fight in itself has garnered attention, a rather intriguing rehydration clause put forward by Davis has become the bone of contention. However, it should be mentioned that this was not the first time that a weight cut caused an issue in a Davis fight. In fact, his former opponent, Rolando Romero, recently opened up about passing out during a weight cut.

Romero faced Davis at the Barclays Center in New York, on May 28, 2022. Moreover, he was on a quest for Davis’ WBA (Regular) lightweight title. However, he ended up losing the fight via a 6th-round TKO.

He was recently in an interview with ESNEWS.

In conversation, the interviewer asked Romero if the weight cut was taxing. Romero responded by saying, “F**k yeah. I passed out twice. I passed out. It was that bad. I lost, coz I lost two extra pounds. Because the thing is I lost 17 pounds overnight.”

Meanwhile, Romero is all set to face Alberto Puello for the WBA Super Lightweight title on May 13, 2023.

The fight is scheduled to take place at catchweight, with both fighters weighing in at a 136 lbs limit. A clause was put forward from Davis’ end stating that the fighters are not allowed to gain more than 10 lbs after rehydrating. This, in turn, caused a massive uproar from fans, with many calling it an unrealistic decision. Garcia, on the other hand, did not seem too worried about it. ‘KingRy’ said, “He likes to fight people with no power. So he is trying to weight drain me.”

There is no denying that a drastic weight cut will drastically affect an athlete’s performance on fight night.
