In the end, Adrien Broner couldn’t match Blair ‘The Flair’ Cobbs‘ flair. The former four-division champion, despite a resurgent resistance to the Philadelphian southpaw’s onslaught, finally succumbed. It seems like he lost a tooth as well in the trade. Nevertheless, the unanimous loss, his fifth career loss, has in many ways put a big question mark over the future of one of boxing’s most exciting and voluble personalities.

No prizes for guessing; many well-known names, saddened by Adrien Broner’s defeat, poured their hearts out on social media. The fight, part of a big Don King card, took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

During the last five years, it’s been primarily a journey of breaks for ‘About Billions’. He returned on February 20, 2021, to face Jovanie Santiago, two years after the Manny Pacquiao loss. But only to proceed for another pause. Finally, he returned last year and defeated Bill Hutchinson on June 9. Broner will turn 35 on July 28.

He likely realized that he doesn’t have much time left for boxing. So the fight with Blair Cobbs might have been a one-way ticket to reclaim lost glory. Sadly, it didn’t go out the way he and many of his fans would have wanted. Right from the beginning, Cobbs, the busier of the fighters, controlled the bout.

Things took a turn for the worst when the Philadelphian knocked down ‘About Billions’ in the second round. Per several reports, the latter lost a tooth as he went down to the canvas. However, Broner survived the scare. Towards the later rounds, it appeared as if he was getting back to his groove. But sadly, to no avail. By the time the fight reached its end, it was clear who had done the homework between the two.

Underwhelming Outcome

The regrettable conclusion soon witnessed a bunch of boxing celebrities penning words to their thoughts. Let’s check out a few of those comments.

With two of the judges handing over similar scores, 96-93, and the remaining third scoring 97-91, Dan Rafael, clearly on a sad note, concluded that it was all over for Adrien Broner.

Former world champion Shawn Porter also lamented. He seemed worried about what could be the next course of action for ‘About Billions’.

Welterweight prospect Jalil ‘Major’ Hackett appeared emotionally distressed.

Happy Punch shared that the commentator mentioned Broner losing a tooth during the knockdown.

Dan Rafael stated it plainly. Aside from knocking down ‘About Billions’, Blair Cobbs also caused the Cincinnati-born former world champion to lose a tooth.

But amidst the gray clouds, a shimmer of light appeared. Rising star Curmel Moton believes that Adrien Broner will be back. All he needs is an ideal training camp, and Cobbs would be paid back in the same coin.

To be fair, given his past record of absences, there was quite a lot of apprehension about whether Adrien Broner would make it to the fight or not. The fight poster had an interesting tagline below his and Cobbs’ picture: ‘if Broner shows up’. But the four-division champion came.

Displaying his seriousness about the fight, Broner even joined renowned trainer Calvin Ford’s camp in Las Vegas. But now, given the heartbreaking results, it needs to be seen what measures he is going to take to resurrect his sagging fortunes. Perhaps a tune-fight or two should first help him regain some confidence before launching what could be his last campaign for a world title?

What is your take from Adrien Broner’s defeat? Do you think it’s high time he called quits?
