Canelo Alvarez returned to the Super Middleweight division in 2020. After that, he was on a title-unification spree. And he realized his dream of becoming an undisputed champion in the third fight. However, as it is justifiably said, to win is easy, but to remain victorious is an altogether different ballgame. Roughly a year after accomplishing the feat, he had to defend his belts from Gennady Golovkin. After that came John Ryder, and now Jermell Charlo follows suit. But the Super Middleweight champion, going by the appearances, seems unfazed by the new challenge.
Two years ago, one of the crucial title unification bouts eventually brought him close to the undisputed title. Among the reports doing the rounds was Alvarez’s claim of knocking out Billy Joe Saunders in the first two rounds. In the latest development, with just hours left for one of the most pivotal matches of his career, the reverberations of that call-out echoed in the hall where the Mexican champion met members of the media and a few followers.

As he signed autographs, one of the reporters asked a casually attired Canelo Alvarez, “Canelo, you got a round for the knockout? Like you did, Saunders?” The world champion replied, “Yeah, you know I prepare myself to[for] the knockout. Every single time, and I am going to try my best.”
The reporter asked whether he expected Jermell Charlo to move around in the ring. And Alvarez responded in the affirmative, saying that he envisions that happening.
Not as simple as it may seem, Señor

Jermell Charlo and Canelo Alvarez are done with the final pre-fight press conference. The ring remains the final arbitrator to settle the argument between the two undisputed champions. In a strict sense, it could be a mere title defense—a third one for the Mexican icon. However, in Jermell Charlo, he faces an opponent he has yet to come across. The ‘Iron Man’ certainly enjoys the height and reach advantage. Four of his last five fights exemplify how he has developed into a fighter who can go for early stoppages.
He makes up for his lack of experience with a strong chin and an excellent ring IQ, allowing him to switch and adapt to the opponent’s style. Like Alvarez, he rose through adversities—the first career loss to Tony Harrison and the draw with Brian Castano. But both times, he made a comeback to seal resounding victories. Thus, time alone will tell whether Alvarez could impose his will against an opponent who promises to offer a dogged resistance and, who knows, could devise a trick or two.
