Is Edgar Berlanga biting off more than he can chew by provoking a beast like Canelo Alvarez?

Canelo Alvarez has faced all sorts of opponents, but the trash talkers are his favorites. Remember what he did to Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant for trash-talking him? Well, the former undisputed super middleweight champion is now about to enter the ring against his WBA mandatory Edgar Berlanga on September 14th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. And it appears that Berlanga’s loud mouth trash-talking personality has Canelo excited about their fight.

While appearing in a recent interview, ‘Cinnamon’ reacted to Berlanga’s comments about their upcoming fight, where Berlanga claimed he would win the fight. After watching the clip of Berlanga’s confident statement on his phone, Canelo grinned and remarked that he actually enjoys his opponents talking trash, as it only fuels his drive.

“I like them like that,” Canelo said. “I like them to be confident and do a lot of talking.” However, when they enter the ring for the fight, Canelo reveals he enjoys punishing them dearly. “I like breaking their face when they talk like that,” said Canelo. Elaborating on the same, he further added that he is looking forward to his fight to do the same to Berlanga.

“I’m eagerly awaiting that day. It’ll be the beatdown of his life,” Canelo said. It’s worth noting that since losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, Canelo hasn’t stopped a single fight in the distance. Even in his last fight against Jaime Munguia, Canelo dominated the fight and dropped Munguia in the fourth round, but it never came close to a stoppage.

Safe to say that Canelo plans to take Edgar Berlanga through a grueling twelve-round beatdown. But don’t count Berlanga out just yet. Unlike Canelo, Berlanga is coming off a knockout victory in his last fight against Padraig McCrory. A similar performance could quickly turn the tables, though it will be no easy feat. Despite that, Berlanga is confident that he will counter every tactic Canelo has in his pocket.

Ahead of his September 14 showdown against Canelo Alvarez, the 27-year-old has assured everyone that the boxing legend will “feel something different” when they clash. ‘The Chosen One’ is determined to leverage his physical advantages, including his reach and power, to control the pace and deliver punishing shots. His inspiration for this approach seems to be Dmitry Bivol, who focused on maintaining a relentless jab and countering Canelo’s pressure.

Berlanga knows quite well Alvarez intends to break down his defense, but he is prepared to withstand and counter with his own power. As he steps into the ring at the T-Mobile Arena on Mexican Independence Day weekend, Berlanga promises to present the toughest challenge of Canelo’s career. “When we land on him, he’s gonna feel something different for sure. I guarantee you, he’s gonna feel something different,” Berlanga said in the Pound 4 Pound podcast with Kamaru Usman & Henry Cejudo.

With mere days left in the fight, both fighters seem confident about their abilities, but for Canelo, these claims are nothing new. Will Berlanga get added to the list of vanquished foes, or will he rise to the occasion to send Canelo into an early retirement? What do you think?
