Some fights leave an indelible imprint that’s hard to wash off. The memories of a few linger because everything about them was simply too good. But then, there are also some that leave a perennially bad taste in the mouth. So what if fans were to choose a match with the most undesirable lingering effect in recent memories?

Chances are, many would opt for the 2022 bout between Jack Catterall and Josh Taylor. Next month, on February 26, the infamous Glasgow brawl will turn two. Taylor won the fight by a split decision. But to many, the decision was nothing short of a ‘robbery’. In their eyes, Catterall won beyond any doubt. Post-fight, the Scotsman reportedly called off any plans for a rematch. Now, 24 months later, a glimmer of hope appears on the horizon. Speaking to the media, Jack Catterall shared that a rematch with Josh Taylor could well be on its way. Moreover, he expressed a desire to exact revenge on the latter.

Speaking with iFL TV, the Lancastrian southpaw shared how he and Josh Taylor have purportedly given the go-ahead for the second fight with either a March or April schedule. Then he added how desperately he wanted to pummel the Scotsman and move on. He also revealed that random followers often stopped him from broaching the outcome of the first fight.

If it needs to happen now, March, April is when me and Josh have accepted the fight, and I just can’t wait to smash his head in and be done with it all. I’ve been in Dubai a couple weeks now training uh and getting stopped by people, and they’re still talking about the first fight, which is coming up two years ago, so uh, for me, I need to put him to bed,” said Catterall.

But on a contrasting note, Josh Taylor, when asked about the fight, denied signing the deal for a rematch with Jack Catterall. He said, “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s… I don’t know where he got that from. But yeah, I’am looking forward to it. Yeah, we’ll see what’s happening.

When asked if the bout with the Englishman could be the next one, ‘The Tartan Tornado’ answered in the affirmative that it was the thing they were trying to get around to next.

The doorway to the big league

In the interview, Catterall specified how defeating Taylor was critical to his standing in the division. He said that a victory would put him in league with other big names in the 140-pound weight class, such as Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, and Ryan Garcia. ‘El Gato’ said, “It’s frustrating, but again uh I can only control my variables…when I do put him to bed, it does cement me place with the boys, the top boys at 140, to go and fight Lopez to go and fight Haney, Garcia.

In his strong opinion, the Taylor-Catterall fight should have taken place earlier. The talks for the rematch have been going here and there. But when everything is said and done, the clash between two rivals still intrigues the public because of the bad taste left by the earlier match.

The matter, as it appears, clearly needs a bit more clarity to assuage fans who are looking forward to the second edition for some much-needed redemption. Neither of the two currently hold any belt, hence how precisely a win in the rematch would help, time alone will tell. Probably, the ranking as per the sanctioning bodies’ list might take them closer to title eliminators.
