Documentaries about well-known people have become way too common these days, and although they should feel raw and honest, they mostly come out as infomercials. However, that’s not what the director Fernando Villena is going for, with the candid retelling of Oscar De La Hoya‘s story, in the form of a two-part documentary series, “Golden Boy”.
De La Hoya went no-holds-bar for this one, as he tried to present his real self, for the first time, in front of the world. He even talked personally to the executive producers, Mark Wahlberg and Mario Lopez, to keep the story as real as possible. According to Variety, the first part of the series reveals some of the lies that he’s told the world and digs up some painful childhood traumas. It also involves some interviews with his close family members, who also came out frank when talking about the 11-time title holder.
In the second part, his infamous photo of donning lingerie gets the explanation, and it also covers the topic where the boxer talks about the journey of his substance abuse phase.
