The sport of boxing is violent, ruthless, and at times life-altering. Mike Tyson is known for knocking out opponents but has been at the receiving end of the punishment too. He has suffered six defeats in his professional career and five out of his six defeats came via stoppages. Not to mention, the years and years of strenuous training and sparring would have naturally taken a toll on his body.

In his podcast, “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson,” Dr Abhinav Gautam; a physician, and entrepreneur appeared. He has worked with several athletes over the years. During the podcast, Gautam was curious to know Tyson’s relation with pain during his career and after. When asked about the same, Tyson made a new revelation about the condition he sustained since his childhood.

The unheard injuries of Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson reveals in a recent episode of his podcast that he had nerve damage since he was 14 years old. In addition, he suffered multiple hand injuries and busted his head during sparring. In retrospect, Tyson finds it difficult to comprehend that he ended up as a fighter as he was prone to accidents. However, destiny had it for Mike Tyson to be known as the baddest man to ever live.

In the episode, he stated, “I have had pain all my life since I was 14 years old. I had nerve damage. We didn’t know we had an electric shock put an electric shock on the nerve. I broke my hands a couple of times, I bust my head open trying to show somebody and hit a pipe.”

He adds, “I was just a mess when I was a kid. I can’t believe I become a fighter, I had so many bad accidents but this is what I wanted to do.” Despite going through such injuries, ‘Kid Dynamite’ established himself in the sport and etched his name. During the episode, Tyson also expressed how he managed to deal with his injuries to continue fighting.

Tyson would not have achieved what he has achieved in the sport had he not been resilient. Reflecting on the same, in the same episode, he stated, “I fight with it and do you want some so bad? This sh*t is temporary. I take care of it. It is all about committing, dedicating and sacrifice.”
