How much talent and potential does one need to have to be made Floyd Mayweather‘s protégé? Curmel Moton has proved himself as he took down his opponent, Ezequiel Flores in the first round with a knockout in his debut match. Moton has 18 national titles as an amateur and has now stepped into the professional circuit. ‘Pretty Boy’, who is himself mentoring the 17-year-old athlete, has also signed him to ‘Mayweather Promotions’.
In a post-event, both mentor and mentee stepped out to interact with the reporters. Mayweather, while lauding his next-gen athlete, also had little advice for him. What episode of history did he draw from for his protégé to learn?

The walkout bout which saw ‘Big Deal’ take his opponent in the first two minutes happened shortly after the Jermell Charlo-Canelo Alvarez fight. Later, both Moton and Mayweather appeared in front of the reporters for their post-fight interview. While thanking a few of the reporters present and asking the fans to be supportive of Moton in the future as well, ‘Money’ pulled in Michael Jordan’s name to give his mentee an example of faulty financial management.
“When you look at Michael Jordan career, Michael Jordan got with a company which was Nike, a 300 million dollar company. He turned that to, that company became a 168 billion dollar company but Michael Jordan don’t own nothing from that company. Whereas with me, I gambled on myself and that 750 million came from you guys.”
The football legend has had a 40-year-old long relationship with Nike. Through this duration, Nike has jumped from being a $300 million company to a $750 billion one. Much of the credit can be due to Jordan, who also has a special line-up of Nike shoes, the Air Jordans. According to Mayweather, this was a loss for Jordan, since none of the profit fell directly into his bag.
Mayweather, who walked out of Top Rank and became the richest boxer, believes the NBA star could have made loads of money if he had made the right decisions early on in his career. He wants to teach financial responsibility to Moton so he can be independent when he is Mayweather’s age.
