Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is set to take on Gennady Golovkin for the third time on September 17th. Both fighters will meet in the ring after four years, following their second fight that took place in 2018. The two seemingly went in different directions after Alvarez’s victory, with the Mexican superstar conquering the super-middleweight division.

Alvarez was on a seven-fight win streak, defeating the likes of Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant, and Sergey Kovalev, proving he was the best boxer in the world. This led many to believe that Alvarez will go down as one of the best athletes to ever grace the sport after he retires. However, UFC commentator Joe Rogan is skeptical that Alvarez can reach those heights as he dropped a harsh truth bomb on the champ.

Joe Rogan reveals the harsh truth

In his podcast along with former lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr., Rogan praised Alvarez for his tenacity. He stated that Alvarez could become the best ever if he defeated unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

I think he can do it. I think he’s in that running he’s the greatest of all time if he beats Usyk,” said Rogan.

However, Kambosos pointed out that Alvarez might be aiming for the record of competing in most divisions. He stated that Alvarez might not be able to beat this record that is currently held by boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. “You know what I’m trying to think how many divisions it is. I don’t know if he’s trying to get close to the great Manny Pacquiao. I don’t think he can, though,” said Kambosos.

Rogan agreed with Kambosos and stated that Alvarez would have to compete in the heavyweight division to beat this record. “I don’t think he can he’s probably gonna have to move up to heavyweight,” he said.

Manny Pacquiao is the only boxer in the history of the sport to become an octuple champion. He has held 12 world titles across 8-division, a feat unmatched by any other boxer. Although Alvarez has won titles across multiple divisions, he is still nowhere near this record.

The Mexican boxer has won titles across four weight divisions. He has won belts in super welterweight (154 lbs), middleweight (160 lbs), super middleweight (168 lbs), and light heavyweight (175 lbs) divisions. He has also unified the super middleweight division, holding all four major titles.

However, Alvarez’s limits were exposed after his loss to Dmitry Bivol earlier this year. The fight was proof that he is still a long way from moving up from the light-heavyweight division to higher-weight classes.
