Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will fight the fighter he truly wants to fight. The Mexican fighter perhaps even deserves that privilege. In his 64-fight-long career, he’s only lost twice. Today, after having navigated almost 18 years in the professional ring with all the strength he could muster, the fighter stands at the brink of global domination. Having amassed such stature in the boxing realm, the choice falls on him to decide if he would a very crucial fight outlined for next year.
On the 25th of November, David Benavidez will enter the ring against his contemporary, Demetrius Andrade. For a long time now, the boxing community has called for a fight between Canelo and Benavidez. However, with the Benavidez-Andrade clash on the horizon now, there is a clear understanding that whoever wins between them will face Canelo. But will Canelo take that fight? A popular entity in the boxing realm disagrees.

Recently, International Boxing Hall of Famer Elector and promoter, Rick Glaser, took to his X to examine if Canelo would be interested in fighting the winner of Benavidez vs. Andrade. While noting that Canelo has reached a point in his career where he can deny a fight for not wanting to fight it, Glaser noted, “#BenavidezAndrade is in reality a #WBC Eliminatior for the right to be the Mandatory for Canelo, but I don’t see Canelo fighting the winner, Mandatory or not. Simply don’t. Remember this very important rule “No one tells a King what to do” That applies here perfectly. #Boxing”

The focus has shifted to Canelo. After his September fight against Jermell Charlo came heavily in his favor, the Mexican fighter rose to pinnacles immediately. Earlier, there was conjecture that Benavidez would fight Canelo. However, based on what Glaser says, Canelo may or may not choose Benavidez as his next opponent, despite being the mandatory challenge for him.

Inactive welterweight fighter Chris Algieri discussed the upcoming David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade clash. He, however, leaned towards Benavidez due to his youth, size, and extended tenure in the super middleweight division. Further, Benavidez being his favorite, Algieri said, “I wouldn’t call it a 50-50 fight. I think it’s a very competitive fight, but I’m going to lean towards David Benavidez. He’s the younger guy, the bigger guy, and he’s been in this weight class longer.”
Ultimately, Algieri too underscored Canelo’s influence, expressing that the outcome of the Benavidez vs. Andrade bout might not solely determine Benavidez’s path to a Canelo fight. Canelo’s discretion reigns supreme, leaving both fighters potentially overlooked despite their positions in the rankings. Rick Gasler’s opinion on Canelo choosing to fight or not is still up for question.
