After his sensational win over Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020, Teofimo Lopez lost the Lightweight title to the Australian George Kambosos Jr. a year later. Since then, the Honduran-American boxer has been trying to discover his flair. However, while he and his wife are undergoing the separation process, doubts over his mental fitness reportedly turn up as he prepares for the big fight. So what does ‘The Takeover’ have to say about those misgivings?
The twenty-five-year-old son of immigrants from Honduras, Teofimo Lopez, has much to prove as he decided to move up a division and challenge a reigning champion. It’s not that he’s new to 140 lbs. After the loss to Kambosos Jr., he fought Pedro Campa and Sandor Martin in the Light Welterweight division. That being the case, he might have thought of becoming a two-division champion and challenged the undefeated Scotsman, Josh Taylor.
Mind matters, but ‘The Takeover’ rebuts any challenges

But, as much as he exudes confidence, talks about his mental health somehow crept in. As a result, the young boxer defended himself during an interview with Punsh Drunk Boxing.
When asked about the current situation and how he fared regarding mental health, Lopez replied, “I’m at peace, man… I don’t have a parasite sucking me dry going home, you know. I think that’s what it was, man… people [people] are in a run for their money now, you know, for five years, I was dealing with that…”
During the interview, ‘The Takeover’ clarified that issues didn’t stem from boxing, but from his personal life. He said, “What am I doing wrong? What has really been the issue? It’s not my [my ] boxing, so to speak. Ah, it’s my personal so much drama that this person has been trying to weigh me down on….” Reportedly Teofimo Lopez and his wife Cynthia, whom he married in 2019, are undergoing divorce procedures. In a separate interview, he mentioned how he hadn’t been able to see his son for some time.

Teofimo Lopez, the heart of hearts
But notwithstanding his clarifications, this would be the first time Teofimo Lopez had come under the scanner for his mental well-being. According to a 2021 article on ‘boxinscene,’ Lopez revealed some of his innermost thoughts to reporters as he was about to defend his newly won titles from George Kambosos Jr. He said, “… That’s what happened with me… I’m really thinking about killing myself. That’s how serious it got. Not once. Not twice. Maybe like three times. I was like that ain’t right. Why am I going to want to kill myself with the blessings that I’m receiving?”
Otherwise, as far as boxing goes, it remains to be seen how Teofimo Lopez fares against Taylor at the Hulu Theater. The fight is expected to be close. However, going by the oddsmaker’s scale, the latter seems to have the upper hand as the favorite.
