With a unanimous decision victory over Jaime Munguia, Canelo Alvarez proved yet again why he is the king of the Super-Middleweight division. Contrary to Oscar De La Hoya‘s expectations, who hoped a young Munguia would beat Canelo like the ‘Golden Boy’ dethroned Julio Cesar Chavez, Alvarez managed a praiseworthy victory displaying commendable composure and accuracy. But, what is next for the undisputed Super-Middleweight champion in the sport?

Do we see Canelo Alvarez fight David Benavidez next now that he has handed Jaime Munguia his first professional defeat in the ring? While Canelo did not entirely erase the prospect of a fight against Benavidez, he prioritized financial compensation over what is desired by the fans.

Before the Jaime Munguia fight, amidst popular demand, Canelo Alvarez asked for an astronomical figure of $200 Million to face ‘The Mexican Monster’. At this, although David Benavidez and his father blasted Canelo, Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz believed that Canelo’s demand was somewhat justified. Now, following the impressive win against Munguia, speaking about Benavidez, Canelo reiterated himself as he hoped for the “right” money.

During the post-fight ring interview, Canelo Alvarez was asked what was next. “David Benavidez is the person that everybody across this country [and] the world would like to see you fight,” added Jim Gray.

In his reply, Canelo Alvarez, completely satisfied with his performance and not in a hurry to land his next fight, said, “I don’t know right now. I want to rest, enjoy my family. But, you know, if the money is right I can fight right now. I don’t give a sh*t.” So, one cannot say that Canelo Alvarez is not willing to face David Benavidez at all. However, his demand made Oscar De La Hoya and Jose Benavidez Sr. raise their eyebrows.

Is $200 million simply an excuse for Canelo Alvarez?

Frankly speaking, Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia seemed more like Canelo Alvarez vs. Oscar De La Hoya as ‘Golden Boy’ overshadowed Munguia with his remarks and stunts before the fight. It seemed like every punch that Canelo landed on Munguia was equally suffered by De La Hoya who hoped to distract Saul with a legal notice and a jab at his failed drug test in 2018 before the match tonight. Anyway, in the context of Benavidez, De La Hoya believes Canelo’s demand of $200 million basically translates into “I don’t want to fight him.

On the other hand, of course, Jose Benavidez Sr. is in agreement with Oscar De La Hoya. Likewise, when he spoke to FightHype, Benavidez Sr. ridiculed Canelo’s demand. “Who’s gonna pay him $200 million? At the end of the day, he’s only looking for excuses,” said Benavidez Sr. With that said, do you think Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez will finally take place? Let us know in the comments below.
