In the ever-evolving landscape of boxing, a new contender has entered the ring, and it goes by the name of influencer boxing. From viral headlines to eyebrow-raising incidents, the world of influencer boxing is a realm of contradictions, capturing the attention of a younger audience while stirring debates on the integrity of the sport.

Moreover, in recent months, influencer boxing has ignited a firestorm of attention albeit for the wrong reasons. A recent incident with two female influencers at a weigh-in turned into a brief makeout session. Even more, disconcerting was an incident where a planned fight dissolved into chaos. This came after an influencer resorted to hurling pork hotdogs at his Muslim opponent during a press conference. These types of incidents have become a common theme for ‘internet boxing’ in an effort to gain as many eyeballs as possible. Now, stepping into this tumultuous arena is veteran promoter Barry Hearn with his stance being both candid and reflective of generational differences.

In an interview with BettingSites.co.uk. Hearn held no reservations in expressing his disinterest, admitting that the spectacle “leaves him cold.” However, the British promoter acknowledges the gravitational pull it exerts on a younger demographic, a generation immersed in the dynamics of social media and seeking unorthodox forms of entertainment.

“It’s not for me but that doesn’t mean to say it’s not for another bunch of kids. It comes under that rule; if that’s how you can make a living and you can get away with it then good luck to you. It’s not for me to watch but I do know a lot of people who follow it because it’s a young social media market,” Hearn said

However, while recognizing the allure influencer boxing holds for a specific audience, Hearn raises concerns about the potential consequences for the sport’s sanctity. For years boxing has been regarded as an esteemed sport with high-level athletes displaying their skills to entertain audiences. Now, Hearn feels that this shift towards influencer boxing can harm the integrity of the sport.

Later in the interview, the veteran promoter suggests that the infusion of influencers may erode the storied history of boxing. He also underscores the notion that the presence of influencer boxing might inadvertently distort the perception of what constitutes genuine boxing, ultimately diluting the sport’s reputation. However, in a thought-provoking twist, he directs his accountability not toward the influencers themselves but toward the spectators. He lays the blame for the potential degradation of boxing’s integrity squarely on those who engage with and endorse the spectacle.

“Boxing has always been held in very high esteem and this may slightly detract from that because it brings in people that think that’s real boxing when of course it’s not. I don’t blame them [ the influencers] for doing it. I blame us for watching it.” he added

As the dust settles on the ring of controversy surrounding influencer boxing, Hearn’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the multifaceted impact of this burgeoning trend. The clash of entertainment and sport, generational preferences, and the enduring legacy of a noble discipline all converge in a narrative that transcends the boundaries of the boxing ring. In the end, the question remains – does the allure of influencer boxing forge a new path for the sport, or does it risk steering it into uncharted and potentially perilous territory?
