At the ‘Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer’, Teddy Atlas recently expressed that he would be interested in training Ryan Garcia. According to Atlas, despite having some abilities in specific dimensions, Garcia fell short in his last fight against Gervonta Davis. Atlas believes he can make him better “whether it’s defensively or offensively“. The trainer, who prefers challenges, feels he can make a boxer better only if they are “willing to be honest with themselves“.
In his last fight against Gervonta Davis, absorbing a body shot, Garcia refused to continue. While technical is one of the dimensions in which Garcia struggled, Atlas believes “mental is the main one“. Thus, talking to Brian Custer on the Last Stand podcast, Atlas explained why he could possibly train a fighter like Ryan Garcia. Although money mattered, Atlas declared he wanted to be with a fighter with character and who was “willing to put their ego aside“.

Atlas expressed that he wanted challenges. In addition, he stated he wanted to accomplish something “that not everyone could do.” In the same vein, he spoke about achieving something significant in the sport. “What would interest me would be a guy like Ryan Garcia. That he fell short, he’s got some ability but he’s fallen short in certain dimensions. A technical is one of them but mental is the main one. I want a challenge. But I want the challenge to have a chance to end with something big, significant, [and] great,” Atlas said.
For Atlas, it starts with having a cause, a person who needs help. In his checklist, there are two elements that make him want to train a fighter in the sport. First, Atlas has to feel that he can make the fighter in question better. And secondly, the fighter must also believe in Atlas and likewise put his ego aside. Hence, although Atlas acknowledged the importance of financial gain, he emphasized the need for a boxer with character and decency.

“I have to believe that I can make them better whether it’s defensively or offensively. And the second thing is that I have to know that person believes that I can make them better. Someone willing to be honest with themselves, willing to put their ego aside and say, ‘Yeah, I got to get better.’ Show me the character, show me the decency,” Atlas added.
Recently, Garcia announced he would make his return to 140 lbs. This assertion has led fans to believe that he would likely fight ‘Rolly Romero’.
