The arrival of Saudis in boxing has brought a surge of cash into the sport that was unprecedented before. With the declining popularity of the sport over the last decade, no one could have predicted that things could turn around this much in such a short period of time. But it did, thanks to the Saudis and especially the Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, Turki Alalshikh.
The biggest matchups, stacked cards, sensational events—boxing fans have seen everything in the past few years under the Riyadh Season banner. They are now waiting desperately for the September dream fight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford. Quite possibly the biggest fight in modern boxing, the fight has expectedly created a buzz amongst everyone. Former four-division champion Mikey Garcia, who has shared his prediction on the bout multiple times, once again had something to say, followed by a $100 million potential fight for Terence Crawford.

It’s win-win for Terence Crawford
In a recent conversation with FightHype, Mikey Garcia claimed that in a fight of this scale, both Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are “winners at this point. If they get that done, who gives a f**k what happens. Cuz they’re making the most money they’re ever going to make. And that’s basically why they’re doing that fight.”

In a previous interview with FightHub, Garcia claimed that the September bout was more for money than legacy. He had the same opinion during this interview, claiming that for such an amount, Bud would fight anyone. “Next thing you know, they’re going to do Crawford against Usyk or something,” stated Garcia. The 37-year-old believes that if Terence Crawford is offered $100 million to fight even the unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, he should accept it.
Because, “If they are offering 100 million, I bet you Crawford will take it again. These are matchups that no one loses. They’re all going to win because they’re making so much money,” Mickey Garcia explained. This is what makes the Saudis such effective matchmakers. No one is too big for them, no fight is impossible to make. While it is just a hypothetical matchup, maybe with a touch of sarcasm injected into it, Garcia believes that the way boxing is moving, that could happen.
Coincidentally, Usyk is a huge fan of Crawford. Last year, ahead of his fight against Tyson Fury, he even declared the Omaha native as the “best pound-4-pound number 1” fighter. So, who knows, maybe even he would love to fight Bud.
Coming back to the September bout, the Ventura native previously claimed to not be a massive fan of Crawford moving up two divisions, but he has slightly changed his prediction now.

Is Saudi money the savior of boxing, or is it just about the cash grab?

Canelo Alvarez might be in trouble
Garcia is no stranger to moving up divisions. After all, he is one of the few fighters to win world championships in four divisions. Furthermore, the 37-year-old has previously hailed Terence Crawford as one of the most skilled fighters in the world. However, despite everything, he believes that the Canelo Alvarez fight might prove to be too much. “It still is an interesting fight when you look at styles and techniques and whatnot. Yeah, there’s some interest. Crawford, I think, is one of the best skilled fighters ever, but the size does make a difference,” stated Garcia.
Furthermore, the Mexican-American boxer referred to how the 37-year-old is not just moving up one or two weight classes. Referring to the Israil Madrimov fight, where he had already jumped three weight divisions from where he started his career. “He barely had the one fight at 154, now he’s what is it, 168?” Garcia asked. Terence Crawford knows that while moving up, the speed can significantly reduce because of the excess weight. That is exactly what Crawford will have to deal with while fighting Canelo Alvarez at 168 lbs. He predicted, “That’s going to be tough for him to carry power and carry the speed at such a high weight class.”

However, despite declaring Canelo Alvarez as the clear favorite in his previous prediction, Garcia believes that things could turn out to be different. “But who knows, he might be able to box effectively, and Canelo might be on a way down, and maybe he wins, you never know. So we’ll be watching,” he added.
Even though Garcia is not sure how the September bout will turn out to be, he assured everyone that “It’s Entertainment,” and everyone should strap in. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts down below.
