Ryan Garcia just pulled the ultimate switcheroo on Devin Haney! After defeating Oscar Duarte last year, ‘King Ry’ had a buffet of opponents to choose from. However, he chose to dine with Devin Haney for his next fight in the first quarter of 2024. Both fighters shook digital hands, promising fans an ultimate PPV showdown.
Even Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, seemed optimistic about hosting the fight. Here comes the big BUT. Earlier today, the Victorville native turned to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his change in ambition, naming Rolly Romero as the next opponent. The pair were in talks to fight each other before Haney came into the picture. So, when Haney discovered the news, he wasn’t so happy, calling out Garcia for the same. But Garcia wasn’t going to take it lying down – he retaliated with his own remarks.

After Garcia announced the news about him fighting Romero next, instead of Haney, which he agreed to earlier, ‘The Dream’ responded with anger. The newly crowned 140 lbs champion wrote, “Don’t ever mention my name, pu**y boy.” Soon, Garcia discovered Haney’s discontentful tweet, so he wrote back, “You’ll be back. #30kPPVBUYPU**Y.”

While things could have ended then and there, Garcia had to rub it in some more. As shared by Michael Benson, online editor for Talksport, ‘King Ry’ doubled down, suggesting that’s how to deal with people who are beneath him. “This is how you deal with people not on your level in every way,” Garcia wrote in his Instagram Story. However, this wasn’t the end of Garcia’s tweets!
Garcia’s thoughts on the fight against Rolando Romero
After Garcia spilled the tea, taking the boxing world by surprise, Romero turned to X, sharing a poster for their fight set for Spring 2024. Moreover, in another tweet, Garcia addressed his decision to opt for Romero instead of the Haney fight. “After what happens to Rollies, the dev [Devin] fight will be there and even bigger,” Garcia claimed.
After what happens to Rollies, the dev fight will be there and even bigger. Everyone critiquing now. Will end up seeing it was a better move. Plus he can go fight Richardson Hitchens. Go do your 30k PPV buys. I don’t need you dev you need me.

He went on to suggest that despite all the critiques about his decision, people will realize this was the best move for him and his career. Meanwhile, Garcia advised Haney to fight Richardson Hitchins, who is the number one contender for Subriel Matías’ IBF title. ‘King Ry’ ended by claiming, “I don’t need you, dev [Devin] you need me.”

The move from Garcia is strategic to secure Rolly’s super lightweight title. So Garcia can negotiate a better deal with Haney when they eventually fight. But if Romero proves to be too much for the Victorville native, this might be the end of his career. Do you think Rolly Romero can defeat Garcia? When do you think a fight between Garcia and Haney would happen?
