IBF super middleweight champion William Scull is coming in hot. The Cuban boxer is days away from his career-defining fight against unified champion Canelo Alvarez on May 3rd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, it appears he is in a verbal spat with someone else entirely—Conor Benn and his legendary father Nigel Benn ahead of the mega bout. 

If you didn’t know, Conor Benn just lost a close fight to rival Chris Eubank Jr. in Tottenham on Saturday night. However, before the fight, Benn Sr. made some bold claims about his son’s sparring session with ‘El Indomable’ Scull. According to Benn Sr., his son took on Scull in a sparring session during training. 

Benn Sr. suggested that his son was supposed to spar Scull for 10 rounds, but Conor Benn made him quit after eight rounds. Despite those claims, Benn, of course, ended up losing to Eubank Jr., and now, William Scull is furious about it. While appearing in an interview with iFL TV, Scull revealed what really happened and slammed Benn Sr. for misrepresenting facts. 

“Honestly, his dad is unprofessional to make this comment,” Scull told the reporter, per translation, when asked about the claims from Benn Sr. He also used Benn Jr.’s loss to Eubank Jr. to allude that everything Benn Sr. said was a lie. However, Scull acknowledged that the sparring session was a good experience for him.

“We had a good sparring, couple of rounds,” Scull said. “He scored [a] couple of rounds, I score [a] couple of rounds. It’s not a real fight, it’s sparring.” Scull also emphasized that both of them were at different stages of their camp, but he wouldn’t stand for the claims made by Benn Sr. “It was not [anything] the way it had [been] mentioned.”

Scull took the disrespect from Nigel Benn as motivation, claiming they are using his name to grow in the sport. He also promised, “We’ll see on May 3. I will show what I have to show.” As Scull prepares to prove his critics wrong, he has revealed what he plans to do after potentially causing an upset next month. 

William Scull reveals his plans post-Canelo Alvarez fight

After his clash with Canelo Alvarez, William Scull isn’t thinking about taking a break—he’s thinking legacy. When asked what he plans to do if he beats Canelo Alvarez during an interview with Fight Hub TV recently, instead of dreaming of ultimate glory, Scull remained grounded, stating, “Eventually you can’t decide or define something before it happens.”

Clearly, Scull knows the uphill battle ahead of him, so he shared a calculated answer, noting, “If I defeat Canelo in that fight, it’s just amazing.” But more than that, Scull believes the unlikely situation will help him build his legacy. “I’m making my own legacy in the world, who I am trying to keep growing as a boxer and keep putting my name in the world,” he said.

That being said, it appears William Scull is not willing to stand for any sort of disrespect against him. He will look to prove everyone wrong on May 3rd. But the question is: Could Scull have been stopped by Benn? Can Scull beat Canelo?
