Is Devin Haney's career crumbling under the weight of his own controversial tactics?

“I just think it’s karma.” That’s how Regis Prograis summed up Devin Haney, dropping the fight to Ryan Garcia. ‘KingRy’ had come 3 pounds heavier than the weight limit and knocked Haney down thrice in the fight. Haney’s career was never the same since, as he went on to relinquish the WBC gold strap and take a break. However, his history of carrying a significant weight advantage has been put in the limelight again.

ShowBizz The Adult took to his social media handles and blasted Haney, 25, and put the onus of the loss on the fighter himself. How? The analysis was in reference to something Joe Rogan once said about the issue of weight-cutting in boxing. “If you look at deaths in boxing, most of the deaths in boxing are the lighter weight divisions. Because when guys dehydrate themselves to make weight, their brain is the last thing that gets rehydrated,” Rogan explained. If anyone remembers the Haney-Garcia weigh-in, they would know how frail and weak Haney looked in comparison with Garcia, who looked perfectly fine since he was already 3 pounds over.

Detailing the American fighter’s weight concerns at 140, he also drew parallels with Gervonta Davis, who carries a weight advantage in the lightweight division and if he moved up to 140, he would have an even greater advantage since Davis wouldn’t have to dehydrate himself to make weight.

He said, “That’s [weight bulling] not always a thing that helps you. That’s why, when I say Tank moving up to 140, he’s gonna be old school. He’s gonna be better than everybody else. All those weight bullies are gonna get their heads knocked off by ‘Tank’s power.” Since others would have to dehydrate themselves to face Tank and he wouldn’t have to subject himself to such a drastic cut, on fight night, it will work to Tank’s advantage, opined the commentator.

While explaining what happened to Devin Haney while fighting Garcia, the commentator trashed the belief that most people hold about Haney not having a chin, or him not being able to pack a punch. He instead blamed the loss on the grueling process of dehydration, proceeded by the rapid rehydration. He declared, “Wait a minute. Devin Haney ain’t got a chin? He ain’t got a chin, huh? He ain’t got no pop, huh? Maybe it has something to do with that weight-bullying technique. That Snac.”

ShowBizz The Adult attributed this to Haney, at 31-0, dehydrating, having to make the weight, and his brain not rehydrating fully before the fight. Meanwhile, Garcia didn’t go through the same. He continued, “You start off looking like skin and bones on the scale. Then you come in diabolical 20 pounds over, getting your head knocked off. He [Ryan Garcia] got a chin. You can’t take a hit. You thought it was ostarine. It was that sh*t! He ain’t healthy. He’s sick.”

Therefore, he advised Haney to move up to 147, where he wouldn’t have to go through it and his opponents would try to go through the vicious cycle of dehydrate and rehydrate. This will then consequently help Haney have an edge over his opponent. This might also turn out to be the reason why he might not want a rematch with Garcia. On the other hand. Garcia, 26, is already planning a match in early 2025.

Ryan Garcia picks his next opponent, brushing aside Devin Haney

Garcia, at 24-1, recently called out Teofimo Lopez for a contest, and there has been significant buzz around the fight. In addition, his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has also affirmed the possibility of matching them. He announced, “Yeah, absolutely Teo; yeah. Ryan wants Teo.”

Compared to Garcia, there is no concrete rumor about Haney and when he wants to return. While there had been speculations of a rematch, Haney slapping a lawsuit on Garcia might ruin the chances. What’s more? Garcia might be a bigger name when he makes a return. Whereas, Haney might have to start from scratch again.
