A lot of things happened in the span of a few hours earlier today! Some good, some great, some not so good, and some not so great! However, leading the headlines is Ryan Garcia, as he took a U-turn concerning who he wants to fight next. Moreover, a handful of hours following that, Shakur Stevenson came out of the bush works to issue a challenge to the entire 140lbs division.
Not so long ago, ‘King Ry’ was hellbent on having Devin Haney as the next opponent, evident from his tweets online. However, the Victorville native has his heart set on someone else now. Meanwhile, ‘Sugar’ Stevenson expressed his desire on X to see someone at 140lbs fight this rising star from Puerto Rico.

The recently crowned or recently bashed for his performance against Edwin De Los Santos, Shakur Stevenson found himself engrossed in X. “I want to see somebody at 140 fight that Subriel Mathias dude.. He will give a lot of people hell, especially if u can’t clip him,” wrote the undefeated boxer. Subriel Matias, also known as ‘Browny NoMás,’ last appeared in the ring against Shohjahon Ergashev.

The fight unfolded on 25 December at Michelob Ultra Arena, Las Vegas, in the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade. The IBF superlightweight champion stopped Ergashev in the sixth round to defend his IBF title for the second time. That aside, what’s up with Ryan Garcia? Who is he actually fighting next?
Ryan Garcia takes a step back!
Just a week ago, a fight between Garcia and Haney seemed all but confirmed, yet Garcia seems to have taken the easy way out, at least for his next fight. After the Victorville native defeated Oscar Duarte on December 2, Garcia openly called out Rolly Romero for a fight. However, things weren’t moving as fast as he would have preferred, so he moved on to Haney.
I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route. My intent now is to fight Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision. Oscar make this fight happen. THATS THE MOVE. BIGGER FIGHT, BIGGER BUSINESS. #GarciaRomero

Both fighters even affirmed the news on social media on several occasions. Nevertheless, as it turns out, ‘King Ry’ penned another tweet today, claiming Romero will be his next opponent after all. “I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route. My intent now is to fight Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision. Oscar make this fight happen. THATS THE MOVE. BIGGER FIGHT, BIGGER BUSINESS,” wrote Garcia.

Perhaps Shakur Stevenson wanted Ryan to fight Matias, but as of now, Garcia wants to seal the deal with Romero. However, if Garcia’s potential opponent can change once, it could happen again! Until then, who would you like to see in the opposite corner from Garcia?
