More than his professional career, his family history usually overshadows the conversation. But John Gotti III is in an interesting position as he finds his father, John Gotti Jr., in his corner, handling the business outside the ring, while he puts on a show inside it. But what is their dynamic? Does the father dominate his “soft-spoken” son’s persona? Or is it the other way around?
The fans had a glimpse into the close bond between Gotti Jr. and Gotti III when the two sat down with DAZN. After calling the New York boxer “soft-spoken”, the host asked him, “Is that a blessing to you, or do you find that your dad is too controlling?” However, to answer that, he turned to Gotti Jr., who then shed light on their teamwork and how the two work in any situation. And Gotti Jr. was not short of praise for his son.
Gotti Jr. pointed out his 31-year-old son was smart, dwelled over certain segments of a fight, and replayed those in his head. But whenever he would try to put a new perspective on his son’s thought process, he was told to take a back seat. The former mobster explained, “John’s a smart kid. He’s a deep thinker and he’s a dweller. He dwells a lot, he thinks a lot, he replays things in his head continuously.”

“Like he’s replayed this Mayweather fight over and over in his head. He knows exactly what he wants to do. So when I try to weigh him with a perspective, he’ll stop me. He’ll correct me and say, ‘Did I fight him or did you fight him?’ So that’s how he shuts me up,” Gotti Jr. added.
Gotti Jr. also admitted to clashing “a lot” with his son, but they had their duties and roles clear. Gotti III, at 2-0, handles things inside the ring, and his father gives him resources outside of it. The eventual outcome of this dynamic was them landing a coveted fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. For the New York native, it was an experience for ages.
