Is Devin Haney really a fraud, or is Miguel Cotto just bitter about his own past?

The feud between Gervonta Davis and Devin Haney continues, but this time it’s Davis’ coach, Kenny Ellis, throwing verbal jabs at ‘The Dream.’ The funny part is that Ellis has taken his witty slights at the former undisputed lightweight champion to a whole new level. How? Well, he just roped in Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito

If you were living under a rock in 2008, the first fight between Cotto and Margarito kicked up quite the storm in the boxing world. Margarito brutally demolished Cotto to win the fight via an 11th-round knockout. It was devastating to watch, as the Puerto Rican champion had never been outmatched that way before. After the fight, Cotto claimed Margarito’s punches felt unusually hard and did more damage than he had felt before. However, the protests fell on deaf ears. This situation would get intensified before Margarito’s next fight.

What did Antonio Margarito do?

In January 2009, ‘El Tornado de Tijuana’ was about to square off against Shane Mosley. However, during a pre-fight inspection, Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson, pointed out a strange hardened substance under Margarito’s wraps. The wraps were immediately examined and the California State Athletic Commission confirmed it was a plaster-like substance under Margarito’s wraps.

This resulted in many finally paying heed to what Cotto had been saying and presuming that Margarito may have used the same substance in his wraps during the Cotto fight, which resulted in his win. Regardless, Margarito was suspended for a year, and when Margarito and Cotto met again three years later, Cotto won the fight via 9th-round stoppage in a dominating fashion. Margarito’s career never fully regained from the beating.

Regardless, using this incident, Coach Kenny Ellis took an indirect jab at Haney on his Instagram story. Ellis wrote, “Miguel Cotto was cheated when Antonio Margarito, put cement in his hand wraps, Miguel Cotto just simply ran it back like a true fighter.”

Is Devin Haney really a fraud, or is Miguel Cotto just bitter about his own past?

Have an interesting take?

This was, of course, a jab at Devin Haney, who, during a recent appearance on Andre Ward‘s podcast, blamed the reason for his loss on Ryan Garcia‘s use of PEDs. When asked if he were willing to have a rematch to settle the scores, Devin Haney chose not to comment on the matter further.

When BoxingnBBQ shared Ellis’ story on X with his followers, they too had some choice words for Haney.

Fan hopes Devin Haney gets exposed

Haney has been in the headlines lately, so it didn’t take long for fans to catch up to Ellis’ dig at Haney. One user hoped Devin Haney would get exposed, claiming he is afraid. “Shots fired at Haney. Man Haney such a p***y fr. I really hope he gets exposed again. He’s a FRAUD,” the user wrote. It’s worth noting that Haney had earlier claimed he was open to a rematch with Garcia after his one-year ban from boxing was lifted. As of now, things remain unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, this user felt even in the rematch between Cotto and Margarito, the latter had the upper hand for much of the fight. “He ran it back but in the rematch, Margarito still busted up his face even though he lost,” the user wrote. Notably, Cotto looked way better in the second fight, responding to Margarito’s offense.

Like the previous user, even this user had similar thoughts. “The second fight was going much like the first in the latter rounds, they stopped it too early,” the user commented diagreeing with Ellis. However, the fight was stopped because Margarito was unable to continue due to the swelling around his eye caused by blows from Cotto.

Another user highlighted how Devin Haney was still upset about his fight against Garcia. “It’s been 153 days nd @Realdevinhaney still can’t just accept that he got dog walked….,” the user wrote. Notably, Haney’s loss was expunged, and the result was turned into a no-contest.

Another user urged Devin Haney to learn something from Miguel Cotto. The user wrote, “@Realdevinhaney maybe learn something.” In case a second fight does happen between Haney and Garcia, it would probably be a sold-out affair.

That said, Gervonta Davis’ coach found a creative way to slam Devin Haney. However, whether Haney follows Cotto’s example is yet to be seen. Do you think Haney should fight Garcia again next year?
