Jake Paul: Savior of boxing or just another YouTube sensation? What do you think?

Jake Paul first tiptoed into a boxing ring in 2018 in a celebrity boxing fight. He has come a long way since then and proved that he is here to stay. The 27-year-old has brought new eyes to the sport, leading to increased revenue. ‘The Problem Child’ will be seen headlining a boxing event at the Amalie Arena in Tampa this coming Saturday. Ahead of that, the son of boxing legend ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, Shane Mosley Jr. shared his thoughts about the YouTuber turned boxer’s contribution to the sport.

During his appearance on ‘The Rich Eisen Show’, Shane Mosley Jr. talked about Paul’s impact on the growing popularity of boxing. Tom Pelissero, the host, questioned Mosley Jr. about Paul, who is competing at some very high levels despite not having a typical boxing background. The 33-year-old boxer was all praise about Paul and said, “I love it. I never look at a guy that’s getting attention and go, ‘Oh I’m jealous’. I go, for one, ‘How is he doing that? How can I do that?’ And also, if he’s uplifting my sport, he’s obviously working very, very hard.”

Mosley Jr. further acknowledged Paul’s ability to beat competent UFC fighters like Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz. He continued, “So he’s putting in the work and he’s showing my sport a lot of love because he’s given all those fights to boxing, where there could be MMA or whatever the case. So I love that he’s given shine to my sport. And so that only puts more money into my sport, which essentially puts more money for me.”

Well, Mosley Jr.’s dad, ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley has previously been a coach to Paul. The Ohio native has undoubtedly benefited from the boxing legend’s training for all that he has accomplished thus far. As for Sugar’s son, Mosley Jr., his recent victory over Daniel Jacobs last Saturday has further cemented his status as a formidable middleweight. He has also revealed his ambitions to take on Paul’s toughest adversary and what it would require to make that happen.

Apparently, ‘The Problem Child’ was supposed to fight boxing great Mike Tyson on July 20th. However, Tyson had to withdraw from the fight due to a medical condition, and BKFC competitor Mike Perry took his place. Check out Mosley Jr.’s views on him stepping into the ring against the former world heavyweight champion.

Shane Mosley Jr. reveals his thoughts on a possible Mike Tyson fight in the future

Have an interesting take?

There have been several discussions about the Tyson-Paul fight, and how their vast age gap is a topic of concern. Paul is almost 30 years younger than ‘Iron Mike’, which might give him an upper hand against the legendary heavyweight. During the same interview, NFL reporter Tom Pelissero posed the question to Mosley Jr., “I know you’re not a heavyweight, but how old would Mike Tyson have to be for you to get in the ring with him?”

First, the 33-year-old laughed at the prospect of a clash with Tyson. Then he said, “Man, he’d have to be pretty old.” He continued by outlining the rationale behind boxing’s weight divisions and detailing Paul’s bulk-up for his match against Tyson. He further noted, “I’m not a really, really big guy like Mike Tyson, so he’d have to be pretty old for that.”

It’s obvious that this was only a hypothetical matchup and that there is no way for it to ever happen. Who knows, though? There’s always a possibility for Shane Mosley Jr. to take on Mike Tyson if Jake Paul can. Meanwhile, what are your thoughts on Mosley Jr.’s assessment of Paul’s influence in boxing?
