Many questions have since been raised regarding the Californian’s preparedness. Perhaps to cleanse himself of those demons, one of his first steps was to change trainers. According to available reports, he has finally homed in on a famed trainer whose resume includes some of the biggest names in boxing today.

Michael Benson shared a tweet early today about Ryan Garcia deciding on Derrick James as the new trainer. From October 2018 till February last year, along with ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Oscar Valdez, ‘KingRy’ was under Eddy Reynoso‘s tutelage. Then, however, the Emmanuel Tagoe fight on April 9 saw Joe Goossen joining his camp as the primary coach. But as the loss to the fearsome Davis unfolded, the twenty-four-year-old thought that changing his training needs might help from a future perspective.

One user believes that Ryan Garcia has far too many shortcomings requiring immediate attention. The boxing fundamentals need quick refining. Hence, it’s a perfect move if he has picked up Derrick James.

Another user also lauded the youngster’s decision to move with James. Even Gervonta Davis highlighted his improficiency regarding basics.

Meanwhile, one user appreciated Garcia’s decision to choose Derrick James. According to him, besides being in the company of outstanding boxers such as Errol Spence Jr., Anthony Joshua, and Jermell Charlo, he will have the advantage of getting into sparring sessions with Frank Martin.

Victor Delgadillo stated that James’ no-nonsense attitude would work wonders with Ryan Garcia’s boxing basics and make him a better fighter.

However, a few doubt whether it’s such an intelligent step. One user mentioned that Ryan Garcia left Eddy Reynoso’s camp because he felt he was not receiving the right amount of attention from the legendary trainer. So with many stars present at Derrick James’ place, he wonders whether Garcia is under the impression that he’ll get all the focus he needs.

The following user criticized Garcia for not being serious about his career, and that’s the biggest problem. James would be his third trainer in years, but till he gives his whole to the sport, nothing much will come out of it.

Garcia thanked Spence Jr. for guiding him through and letting him in as a team member at the Texas gym. James recently oversaw the fortunes of one of his pupils, Anthony Joshua, turn for good.
